About the Author
Carol Lay is best known for her weekly comic strip Story Minute (later to evolve into the strip Way Lay) which ran for almost 20 years in such papers as LA Weekly, the NY Press and Salon. Her strips and illustrations have also appeared in Entertainment Weekly, Mad Magazine, Newsweek, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The New Yorker. No Fattitude To Begin With

I like Carol Lay's cartoons. I've been enjoying them for years so, when "The Big Skinny" included a lot of personal information about Lay's childhood and her relationship with her mother, I wasn't all that surprised. Her cartoons are often autobiographical. Sometimes reading them is like sitting in on someone else's therapy sessions. Interesting -- and occasionally pretty weird.

I liked the idea of a cartoonized weight loss story from someone with Lay's snarky sense of humor. I like very much how well she explained calorie counting. The calorie totals she's got in the back of the book are useful and some of her recipes look really tasty.

BUT...

It turns out that Carol Lay wasn't actually fat when she began her weight loss program. She weighed about 160 pounds and, at 5'9" -- pretty much every responsible authority agrees -- she would have been, at worst, only slightly overweight. Now her weight averages 125 pounds. Even for a small-framed person, that's just plain skinny.

Her message of eating reasonable portions of healthy foods really gets lost when placed in the context of her, apparently very unhealthy, obsession with thinness. Instead, what comes across is a sad story of one woman's daily preoccupation with eating the small number of calories necessary to keep her (at 5'9"!) in a size 4. That's sick -- and it's not an example anyone should be following.

trading one obsession for another

I once ended a relationship with someone who was in a 12 step program. I did not have a problem with him being in a 12 step program. I did not have a problem with the fact he had been a substance abuser. There were other concerns that made me end the relationship that were much more serious, but it did bother me that he was obsessed with his sobriety. He could not seem to read, think, or talk about anything that did not have to do with his obsession.
Don't get me wrong. AA and other groups have saved countless lives, including his perhaps, but when you are so caught up in your abuse or recovery that you do not recall who is vice president, I don't think that's healthy either. I found Ms. Lay's book at a local bookstore and what intrigued bu the title-- I am working on losing weight. and I know attitude has everything to do with success. I am glad I chose to get the Big Skinny at the library before purchasing it, as I would not now buy it, and I can't recommend buying it to to others.

Ms. Lay has some good things to say, and the graphic novel is a unique way to present her message. I like how she urges us to look closely at labels and to avoid overly processed food. There is a ridiculous story about a friend who sprays a piece of toast to death with cooking spray, however. Not butter spray, cooking spray. Why would anyone do that? Lay lost credibility right there.
The reason for bringing up the ex in AA was that although I admire Lay's ability to keep her weight under control, she is still obsessed with food. Why can't she just eat health and not have to write down every bite she puts in her mouth? I want to master my food issues too-- but I don't think I will if it means I have to think about food all the time.
To sum up, The Big Skinny is just okay. Don't read it expecting to change your fatitude, unless you think trading one obsession for another is good.

A helpful and mildly humorous lark describing her attempts at losing weight, cartoonist Carol Lay gives copious amounts of information in this slim tome. Though it has more nutritional guides than narrative, the graphic novel speeds along briskly. The advice within is honest and direct, but it is nothing new. This is directed more towards an audience who has never tried to lose weight, and doesn't appeal much to anyone else. It is essentially a beginner's guide to calorie counting, more so than a memoir or health book - indeed, it treads a fine line between the two. Amusing, yes, but Lay doesn't cover ground in a way that is outstandingly unique...many have done this topic before her, and many with a more deft hand. The illustration format is a bit quirky and makes the reading light, but otherwise, this is hard to recommend outside of a specific demographic.

Martin Blatt received his Ph.D. in American Studies from Boston University. He is the author of Free Love an Anarchism: The Biography of Ezra Heywood and the co-editor of The Meaning of Slavery in the North. Currently he is the Chief of Cultural Resources/Historian at Boston National Historical Park.

Martha Norkunas received her Ph.D. in Folklore from Indiana University. Her book, The Politics of Public Memory, received the 1994 Historic Preservation Book Award. She served as Cultural Affairs Director for the Lowell Historic Preservation Commission from 1989-1994. Currently she is Oral and Public Historian at the Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin.

After 30 months of surgery and hormone treatments in Denmark, "Ex-GI Becomes Blonde Beauty," the New York Daily News screamed on December 1, 1952. Pioneers, for that is what 26-year-old Jorgensen was, by definition descry no easy paths and must forge them. Nowadays, former NBA superstar Dennis Rodman can ride his motorcycle to a book signing while wearing a stunning wedding gown. The First Famous Gender-Bender

I've long felt it was high time someone wrote a comprehensive biography of Christine Jorgensen. As the book itself says, many people under thirty, including the transgendered, have never heard of Jorgensen. When I was growing up she was usually the punchline to a joke. As a teenager I read her autobiography (which I now learn was ghostwritten by someone else) but Jorgensen was not the most honest or forthcoming celebrity. Dockter's new book is really quite good, covering a lot of territory in her unusual life.
My only complaint was that the last chapters seemed rushed, and her ultimate death in 1989 was handled very quickly and unsatisfyingly. But the rest of it was detailed and thoughtful, with some interesting surprises along the way. Ms. Jorgensen would probably be horrified by the secrets revealed but would also be glad that her mystique lingers on, nearly 20 years after her death.

BECOMING A WOMAN: A BIOGRAPHY OF CHRISTINE JORGENSEN offers a more studied examination of the state of transsexuality than most biographies offer, focusing on the sociology and science issues as much as the biographical factors involved. Thus BECOMING A WOMAN, with its scholarly approach, becomes much more the item of choice for the college-level health or sociology library than for the general-interest collection, with its chapters on psychology, social interactions, and Jorgensen's struggles within larger contexts of social definitions. An excellent guide for college-level holdings specializing in alternative social issues.

No study on the subject of gender dysphoria could be complete without referencing the account of the transsexual whose sex change shocked America in the early 1950s. Christine Jorgensen in her memoir, "Christine Jorgensen, a Personal Autobiography (1967)," outlined her journey from George to Christine. Jorgensen was one of the first individuals of the modern era to undergo what was in the 1950s commonly termed a "sex change operation." "GI Turned Blond Beauty," screamed the headline of the New York Daily News in December 1952. On the cover of the paper was a photo of an attractive young woman waving to the cameras as she exited a transatlantic flight in New York. While in Denmark, she had undergone a radical and experimental operation to turn her into a woman. The story went on to describe the history and process of how the former Army private George Jorgensen was transformed into Christine.

From a young age the article described, George had felt as if he was really a "female trapped in a male body." Unable to repress these disturbing feelings or compensate for them any longer, he obtained medical help and began hormone therapy. On the advice of friends, he traveled to Copenhagen where he met Dr. Christian Hamburger. What Dr. Hamburger learned in his examination and subsequent interviews with his patient eventually led him to perform the surgery that transformed George into Christine. The Christine Jorgensen story told a tale of overcoming the shame of the "abnormality" of having been born in the wrong body. It provided an inspiration for many mid-20th Century gender dysphoria suffers and a legacy that continues to today. What would it mean to be actually able do something about a problem of this magnitude? Christine Jorgensen had placed the importance of her own personal happiness above all else. From what depths did such tremendous courage flow? In the Christine Jorgensen account, gender dysphoric boys heard the word "transsexual" for the first time. In so doing, many found a niche, an explanation, a hope for the future and a direction.

"Becoming a Woman: A Biography of Christine Jorgenson," by Richard F. Docter, PhD is a book I had long wanted to read. However, I had not done so because I thought it to be too pricey. When I became aware that it could be "rented" for a short time at a fraction of the selling price, I downloaded it immediately. After all, it is now about 62 years since Christine made those newspaper headlines for her gender transition and she remains a legend, role model and a seminal figure to the transgender community. When you think about it, the ground she broke in her 1952 transition from a male to female gender role has significantly impacted all of us, not just those of us who are transgender. It stands as an amazing tale describing how a single event has forever changed our world view concerning sex, gender roles and the bi-gender system. The impact of what Christine did back then continues to evolve, and like the ripples in a pond, will go on and on. For as long as there is a bi-gender system and there are people who from an early age, have the idea or thought that they were born in the wrong body, there will be gender dysphoria.

On balance I found the Docter biography to be a worthwhile and well-researched read that brought me back to the 1950's and my first realization that one need not remain categorized in the wrong sex for the rest of their life. And although this account provided a good amount of interesting and missing information about the life of Christine Jorgenson, it was not without its faults. There was a tendency to provide excessive and unimportant information to the reader. The author also gave way too much data about some meaningless things such as sales receipts and income statements, and did so in the minutest detail. I thought that such areas could have easily been condensed and his points made more concisely. Although extremely well researched, this biography also had a propensity toward redundancy. Refreshingly though, I found it to be nicely proofread and relative free of grammatical mistakes. Because of my interest in Christine's story, I stuck with it to the end and I'm glad that I did. However, the repetition and fixation on triviality left me with the weird sensation that the author might have been paid by the page. I know this couldn't be true, but the feeling was reinforced when I noticed that the last 30% was devoted to footnoting and bibliography. Lastly, and probably in part because of Christine's own secretiveness, this work left more questions unanswered than it answered. It's not the author's fault, but we probably will never know about many of the intimate parts of Christine's life. There were many hypotheses and projections drawn about her motivations, possible love interests and other areas of behavior, but because of the dearth of available facts, not many definitive conclusions can be formulated, although the author made some valiant attempts to try.

One thing that emerges clearly from this book is that Christine, in addition to grappling with her gender identity issues, was also consumed by the excesses of substance abuse through alcohol and nicotine addiction. Her self-destructive behavior in this area, her propensity toward poor decision making, her variable and volatile mood swings, her fixation on friending the great and the near great and her willingness to cut people off at the knees if she felt even slightly betrayed or disagreed with, begs the question, "was she also driven by some other overriding issue such as Narcissism or Borderline Personality Disorder?" We may never know, but the fact remains that Christine Jorgensen's impact and legacy will endure.
