David Stott is Cargill Professor of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Glasgow. Chair, Health Services Research Committee, CSO, Scottish Executive, from December 2007.  Systematic Reviews Editor and Member of the Editorial Board for Age and Ageing, 1998 to present. Subeditor for Geriatric Medicine British Medical Bulletin, August 2004 to present. International Advisor, Asian Journal of Gerontology and Geriatrics, August 2006 to present.

Gordon D.O. Lowe is Emeritus Professor (formerly Professor of Vascular Medicine) at the University of Glasgow; Director, Haemostasis and Thrombosis Laboratory and Co-Director, West of Scotland Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre. He has developed a major research programme including clinical trials, and analyses in epidemiological studies of the contributions of haemostatic, thrombotic and haemorheological factors to vascular diseases.

This was a very good book. It is hard to imagine someone like her aunt. But I know, unfortunately, that there really are people like that in real life. I really would recommend reading this book. I will probably read it again someday.

Walsh started posting his altered strips at garfieldminusgarfield.net. And in an act that definitely qualifies him for the good sport hall of fame, Davis not only didn't sue him but approved of the project. This collection of the best de-Garfielded strips prints Walsh's altered cartoons next to Davis's originals; Davis even throws in a couple dozen Garfield-minus-Garfield strips he's done himself. Interestingly, Davis's stabs at the concept are mostly just gags about Garfield's owner, Jon Arbuckle. The gist of Walsh's approach, on the other hand, is to completely alter Davis's jokes—a strip in which Garfield displays a single hair, announces this is all I'll be shedding today and marches off before Jon delivers a punch line, after Walsh gets through with it, becomes two panels of Jon silently glancing around before haplessly declaring, I dread tomorrow. Jim Davis was born on July 28, 1945, in Marion, Indiana. He later attended Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where he distinguished himself by earning one of the lowest cumulative grade point averages in the history of the university. Davis has had many successes with Garfield, including four Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program and induction into the Licensing Hall of Fame (1998), but his most prized awards are from his peers in the National Cartoonist Society: Best Humor Strip (1981 and 1985), the Elzie Segar Award (1990), and the coveted Reuben Award (1990) for overall excellence in cartooning.

Garfield Minus Garfield... minus the laughs? Not a chance!

Let me get this out of the way first: I am a huge fan of the Garfield Minus Garfield website [...]. In retrospect, I am surprised noboby had thought of it earlier; Jon Arbuckle was talking to a cat this whole time, and with Garfield's removal, Jon's sad, lonely life becomes shockingly apparent. Some strips make Jon appear depressed, while others, he appears to be losing his mind. For almost a year now, Dan Walsh has been removing Garfield from the strips, and I cannot thank him enough for making me laugh with nearly every new update. Essentially, I felt I owed it to him to purchase this book.

Fast forward to the present, where Jim Davis (the creator of Garfield) has embraced Walsh's work and creativity, eventually leading onto the release of this book. In glorious colour and with entertaining, interesting written remarks by the two creative talents, I had nothing but huge anticipation for getting my hands on it.

What surprised me is that the majority of the book contain Garfield Minus Garfield strips already featured on the website, shown against the original comic (where Garfield and others are still present). This is not a bad thing at all; it is obvious that the strips were handpicked with care, essentially leaving us with a 'best of' from the archive found on the Internet. Whether Jon is talking to sock puppets, splattering ice cream into his face, or contemplating how he has wasted his life, you'll laugh yourself to death reading them. It's a great way for those new to the edited strips to get into the craze, or for current fans to revisit their favourites.

At the end of the book are Garfield Minus Garfield strips that Jim Davis himself is responsible for. These strips, while not quite on par with Walsh's work, are still quite amusing, and certainly a commendable effort.

Garfield Minus Garfield is simply a brilliant concept, and has finally received justice by being published into a book. I hope that it sells well, and I hope that you enjoy reading it. And who knows? Maybe you'll see a bit of yourself in Jon Arbuckle's life... although I sure hope not!

He wasn't there all along

Taking Garfield out of "Garfield" is a clever concept, and also a pretty insightful recognition that -- as with Charles M. Schulz's "Peanuts," but on a much less profound level -- there's an awful lot of sadness at the heart of this strip. When you start from the premise that cats can't talk, and that therefore Jon never shares in Garfield's interior monologue or the (alleged) punchlines of the jokes, all you're left with is a man struggling with failure, rejection, and the occasional runaway electric toothbrush. It's kind of like The Book of Bunny Suicides. Funny, but also a disturbing.

But not to get too heavy. "Garfield" is still a comic strip, and there are a few laughs to be found here. What I am particularly impressed by, though, is not only Jim Davis' ability to see the joke, but also his willingness to run with it instead of sending in the intellectual-property attorneys with cease-and-desist orders. That raises him quite a bit in my estimation. Of course, in keeping with the spirit of the Big Orange Cat Empire, Davis is making a buck off this book -- it's his name in the byline, with Dan Walsh, the guy who had the insightful recognition in the first place, granted but a Foreword. Still, for "Garfield" fans who want to see the strip in a new, and perhaps unsettling, way, or for readers who enjoy a sort of meta-analysis of a long-running media presence, "Garfield Minus Garfield" has a surprising amount going for it.

Love the comic, hate the book

There's one, big, (and for me, crippling) problem with this book: Every page shows the "minus Garfield" version (which is why you bought the book.) But it ALSO shows the original version just below it.

It's like showing how to do a magic trick right after doing it. Or explaining a simple joke right after telling it. It badly undermines the humor and character of the main event.

"Just don't look!" you might say. But your periphery vision is such that you can SEE that there's missing content, and your brain (or mine, anyway) has to either (a) work distractingly hard to avoid it or (b) find out what the missing content is.

I hate to complain about this book, because I really LOVE the web comic. But I find this book unreadable, presumably due to a bad, egotistical or lawyer-related decision.

About the Author

Qing-Chang Zhong received his Diploma in electrical engineering from Hunan Institute of Engineering, Xiangtan, China, in 1990, his MSc degree in electrical engineering from Hunan University, Changsha, China, in 1997, his PhD degree in control theory and engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China, in 1999, and his PhD degree in control and power engineering (awarded the Best Doctoral Thesis Prize) from Imperial College London, London, UK, in 2004, respectively.

He holds the Chair Professor in Control and Systems Engineering at the Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering, The University of Sheffield, UK. He has worked at Hunan Institute of Engineering, Xiangtan, China; Technion¨CIsrael Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel; Imperial College London, London, UK; University of Glamorgan, Cardiff, UK; The University of Liverpool, Liverpool, UK; and Loughborough University, Leicestershire, UK. He has been on sabbatical at the Cymer Center for Control Systems and Dynamics (CCSD), University of California, San Diego, USA; and the Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES), Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, USA. He is the author or co-author of Robust Control of Time-Delay Systems (Springer-Verlag, 2006), Control of Integral Processes with Dead Time (Springer-Verlag, 2010) and Control of Power Inverters in Renewable Energy and Smart Grid Integration (Wiley-IEEE Press, 2013). His research focuses on advanced control theory and applications, including power electronics, renewable energy and smart grid integration, electric drives and electric vehicles, robust and H-infinity control, time-delay systems and process control.

He is a Specialist recognised by the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), a Senior Member of IEEE, the Vice-Chair of IFAC TC 6.3 (Power and Energy Systems) responsible for the Working Group on Power Electronics and was a Senior Research Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering/Leverhulme Trust, UK (2009¨C2010). He serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics and the Conference Editorial Board of the IEEE Control Systems Society.

Tomas Hornik received a Diploma in Electrical Engineering in 1991 from the Technical CollegeVUzlabine, Prague, the BEng and PhD degree in electrical engineering and electronics from The University of Liverpool, UK, in 2007 and 2010, respectively. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the same university from 2010 to 2011. He joined Turbo Power Systems as a Control Engineer in 2011. His research interests cover power electronics, advanced control theory and DSP-based control applications. He had more than ten years working experience in industry as a system engineer responsible for commissioning and software design in power generation and distribution, control systems for central heating and building management. He is a member of the IEEE and the IET.

Nathaniel Pierce tells Lori that he did not die of battle wounds; he was murdered. Only she can solve the mystery of who killed him, and she has three days in which to do it. At the same time, she has to figure out who is meddling in the shed at night and why. Lori's task is made all the more difficult because she falls in love with Nathaniel and the teenager hired to mow the grass. The juxtaposition of past and present is the backbone of the story. Lori's modern existence of Skyping and wearing shorts offers a striking comparison to Nathaniel's 1860s' strict social mores and cringe-worthy health care. The integration of the real Gettysburg cemetery, Evergreen, provides a haunting backdrop. The mystery is tangential. At the outset, it is pretty clear who is in the shed at night for reasons foul, and who killed Nathaniel. A few points go unanswered, including why Lori has only three days in which to solve the crime. The dense air shimmers. Right in front of my eyes, the molecules — or whatever — form themselves into a shadowy image. A young man, maybe two years older than I am, wearing that same blue visor cap. He's still in that ragged military uniform, which maybe used to be navy blue, and one scuffed boot. His eyes capture me; obsidian-black pools. His lips move, but no sound comes out. Is he mute? Am I deaf?

"Why are you here, Nathaniel Pierce?"

He shakes his head from side to side, me following those black eyes. He turns all the way around. That's when I see the torn fabric and dried blood of a gaping hole in the middle of his back. As if someone had aimed for his heart.

Imperfect, but quick, light, and enjoyable

Rebel Spirits was a bit of a hit and miss for me. There were definitely certain aspects I really enjoyed: the historical connection (especially since I was reading this starting the day after the Gettysburg anniversary), the creepy, almost Gothic tone in parts, and Nathaniel's fascinating history. But there were also things that detracted for me: in general, Lori, THE SUPER INSTA-LOVE, and the writing in some parts. This was a quick, altogether enjoyable read, but not especially memorable.

I love books connected to history, so I was excited to read about the ghost of a soldier who fought at Gettysburg and about how the town is today (I'm super curious to know if it's how Ruby describes. I"m quite sure the reenactments are!) That didn't disappoint; with scenes of cemetery tours, handsome men reliving the battle, and dances in period costumes, I got quite the dose and deeply enjoyed it. I was very invested in Nathaniel's story, and really wanted to hear all about his family, their history, and his experiences fighting.

The biggest detractor for me really was the insta-love though. Generally, I'm not picky about it, but this book takes place over three or four days and by the second day Lori is saying she loves Nathaniel, whom she has probably spent an hour with. I would've really loved a love story with a ghost (and I have previously!) but I felt like the time frame of the book made the relationship feel false and way too rushed.

One thing I especially liked, though, is the eerie tone that is set early on in the book. I dislike things that are outright scary, but I love a foreboding feel. That is exactly what Lois Ruby created; it felt distinctive and made the story feel more urgent, even as Lori is looking to solve a 150-year old mystery.

While there are certain qualities to Rebel Spirits that detracted from my experience, altogether I found it to be enjoyable and quick; it's a romantic and bittersweet ghost story.

Fun read for twwns and tweens with a liking for mysteries

Lori Chase has grown up living in hotels managed by her parents. When they announce that they have bought an aging one themselves and the family is moving from downtown Philadelphia to Gettysburg, She's upset for several reasons. She wasn't involved in the decision, she'll lose her friends and she's going to have to spend her senior year at a new school without knowing anyone.
When she arrives, she discovers the whole town is obsessed with the Battle of Gettysburg, even to the point of staging a four day reenactment of the battle. However, it's that level of obsession that will help her parents get a running start in their new business.
Lori meets some interesting people in the process of getting unpacked and figuring out what room she wants. Her choice is the small room at the top of the inn, just under the attic. Her first introduction is to odd and grumpy housekeeper Bertha, whose even stranger husband, Old Dryden is the bumbling handyman. There are two other people on the staff, Charlotte, a couple years older than Lori, who shares a secret talent with her, and Evan, the teen who mows lawns and strikes her as a bit arrogant.
Her most interesting discovery is Nathaniel Pierce, a ghost who was a couple years older than she is when he was murdered during the Battle of Gettysburg. He's been reappearing every year during the reenactment in hopes he'll meet someone who can help him solve the mystery of who killed him. Lori has been able to see ghosts for years, but hasn't said much to others because she's not comfortable with this ability. When Charlotte tells her she sees them as well, it's a big relief.
How Lori helps solve not one, but two mysteries while escaping some very scary situations, along with her budding romances with Nathaniel and Evan, make this a real page turner for teens and tweens who like a good mystery with a bit of history and romance. I particularly like how the author made Nathaniel be able to appear as a real person when around Lori.

History and the Paranormal = a Fun Read

I'm not really sure what drew me to this novel. Normally I'd run from any book where the heroine might fall in love with a ghost. I mean, really, what good can possibly come from falling for a spirit?! I see nothing but heartbreak on the horizon for the incompatible couple. That said, I enjoyed Rebel Spirits. I read it this morning in one sitting, not because it was that gripping but because I wanted to.

Rebel Spirits is written in first person from main character Lori Chase's point of view. She and her family move to an old bed & breakfast in Gettysburg. It's hinted at the beginning that Lori may have clairvoyant abilities and it's not long before our ghost Nathaniel Pierce makes his presence known to her.

Nathaniel was a Union soldier, murdered in Gettysburg during the famous battle. He needs Lori's help to solve his murder so his spirit can find peace. Nathaniel appears to Lori in both spirit and solid form, making it easier for the poor girl to consider him alive versus dead. Lori just has a few days to solve this crime and to fall in love with this restless spirit. I've never been fond of instant love. It's not even like they spend all that much time together during those few days.

Add to the fray Evan, a cute teenager that assists the gardener at the bed & breakfast her family now owns. Evan is charming, smart, and attractive, as well as being flesh and blood. Now I could see Lori falling in instant lust with him, but she seems to prefer guys that are more corporeally challenged. I liked Evan; he seemed like a great guy.

I think what I enjoyed the most is the mystery and the history. The look back to a brutal battle where thousands of men and boys died in just a few days is haunting in itself. Gettysburg is a great background for any ghost story. Each time Nathaniel started telling his story I was interested, then I was annoyed when he always blinked out faster than I anticipated. It seemed he had difficulty staying in the mortal realm for long periods, but it's never really explained too well.

I can't say that I liked Lori all that much which is too bad considering we spend the entire story inside her head. She was okay but I never really connected with her. I think I would've liked the story better if the romance was only between Lori and Evan while she merely solved the mystery for the ghost.

Fabulous book for girls!

This book series is a touching, honest, refreshing and realistic portrayal of everyday life. The story of Ruby and Flora losing both parents, coming to live in a new town with their grandmother, attending a new school, making new friends and going about everyday life is captivating. My eight-year-old is mesmerized with all books in the series and can't wait for the next.

I would highly recommend this for girls and the adults in their lives too. It provides a good springboard for conversation about life and how to handle different situations.

Best Friends is yet another excellent book in the Main Street Series!

The Main Street series is exceptional. My nieces and I look forward to each new book and have already pre-ordered the next two in the series. The characters are very real and the storyline is plausible. We love these books and Ann Martin is definitely one of our favorite authors!

Not the Best in Series

Although I love the Main Street series, I must admit that I was a little disappointed in this particular installment. There was so much going on with the anniversary event that the story missed out on all of the "scenery" that Martin weaves so well into each tale. The story itself is fine, I just wish I would have had the feeling of being there, as I did in the previous books.
