About the Author
Randi Ettner, PhD, is a clinical and forensic psychologist. She attended Northwestern, Indiana, Harvard, and Roosevelt Universities, and Moray College in Scotland; received the Indiana University Outstanding Psychology Student award; and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She holds Diplomate status in clinical evaluation and trauma. Dr. Ettner has written two books and numerous articles on transgenderism, and an internationally syndicated column on women's health issues. Dr. Ettner's work with the transgender community began at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, in 1977, while she was still a student. She is the founder of New Health Foundation Worldwide, an organization that assists transgendered persons. She has appeared on hundreds of television and radio programs as an advocate for the transgender community. Presently, Dr. Ettner is chief psychologist of the Chicago Gender Team, holds Diplomate and Fellow status, and serves on the Board of Directors of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH previously HBIGDA).

Stan Monstrey, MD, PhD, is Professor in Plastic Surgery and Head of the Department at the Gent University Hospital in Belgium. Since 1990 he has been involved in the surgical treatment of transsexualism as a member of the gender team at the Gent University Hospital. Sex reassignment surgery, in both male-to-female and female-to-male transsexuals, is performed on a weekly basis. Emphasis is placed on close multidisciplinary cooperation, a continuous search to improve aesthetic and functional results, and new phalloplasty techniques. The Gent University Gender Team is also active in social and political issues related to transsexualism in Belgium. In 2003 he organized the biennial HBIGDA meeting in Gent, and from 2005 to 2007 he was president of the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association (HBIGDA), now the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH).

A. Evan Eyler, MD, MPH, FAAFP, is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Psychiatry at the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington, Vermont, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Eyler is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Family Medicine with Certificate of Added Qualifications in Adolescent Medicine, a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and a recipient of the Walter H. Kemp Award of that organization. Dr. Eyler has been active in transgender medical care for many years, and served as Director of Primary Care Services of the University of Michigan Comprehensive Gender Services Program from 1995 to 2000. Dr. Eyler has authored numerous scholarly articles and chapters in textbooks of family medicine and primary care psychiatry, principally with regard to human life cycle transitions.

Excellent Current Resource for Trans Care

This book is one of the better anthologies of care and research articles regarding transgender and transsexual individuals to come out in print. The information is needed and the format is reasonably accessible to both lay and clincial people. There are aspects of the material and information that remain slanted toward a paternalistic methodology and worldview, however, the overall knowledge outweighs these issues at this time. Readers who are themselves transgender may find some of the viewpoints and recommendations to miss the experience and lack in-depth understanding of what is happening and what it is like to "be" transgender. Readers in the United States will find some of the optimism in dealing with mental health clients and suicidality especially frustrating as the articles are written primarily from a European experience in which transgender care is covered by national health insurance. In light of this difference, some of the hopeful assurances suggested to use with clients to reduce suicidal thoughts would be utterly useless in the USA and moreover, the absence of trasngender coverage for care often increases suicidality and other health concerns and risks in the USA. It would have been helpful to have a section on dealing with transgender health care and barriers to care in the USA, in particular due to the disparity of health care coverage between the USA and the rest of the world. This book remains an exciting publication and a much needed beginning in filing the void of medical and mental health care information for those who work with transgender individuals.

Good: But Shocking Historical Error

Over all this book gives a good overview of transgender healthcare. There is however, one incredible historical error. Quote from page 107 "In 1952 the Danish plastic surgeon Paul Fogh-Andersen initiated the modern era of sex reassignment surgery by using penile skin as a full thickness graph to line the neovagina of Christine Jorgenson" NO!!! Jorgenson had a three stage series of operations, first she had an orchidectomy (removal of the testicles) followed several months later with a penectomy (removal of the penis) Both of these surgeries were preformed in Denmark. Several years later she had vaginoplasty in the US. As her penis was long gone by the time she had vaginoplasty, her surgery was done with skin grafts from another part of her body, not penile skin.

Birds of a Feather - Kill Together...

O.M.G. The DUNCAN family is off the hook! Vegas, Rio, Orlando, London and Paris = FIYAH!!! I red this book in a weekend! What a way to start off the new year! This story has plot, sex, drama, sex, suspense, sex, betrayal, sex, power, sex, and of course FAMILY!! Did I mention - SEX!!! Yes! The women are so powerful in this story as well as the men. I can't wait for part 2 - The Family Business is definitely one of the top reads for 2012! Thank you Carl Weber and Eric Pete for delivering an unforgettable story - just what we need to shake off the winter chill...

Whew what a Family....

This book was so different from the other books that I've read by Carl Weber. The Duncan family was off the hook... Orlando, Rio, London, Paris and Vegas are children of LC and his wife. This family had so much drama that it would make your head spin. This book will have you so hyped that you will not be able to put it down. I can't wait for the next one. I hope that it will not be long before it is released. This is a great read and I highly recommend.... This family is like no other...

The Family Business is full of drama and suspense. I started reading and thought I knew where it was going. I didn't, but was glad I chose t go. I recommend this book to all who love good story lines, with the promise of a sequel.

Truthfully, this is a bit unsettling for those of us who have worked in this field. Capturing such a wide array of topics in a single volume is a gargantuan task. Grosjean and Li should be applauded for helping to shape such an excellent text. Most importantly, the editors and authors help to convince the reader of the importance of dynamic processing, whether it be in computer models that have to adapt to language input, brain images that capture how bilinguals switch between languages, or in the nature of speech that takes into account how bilinguals adapt to different linguistic situations. Terrific!

This book was very different from what I anticipated. In the beginning I was a little disappointed because it seemed to lack organization but as I worked through each topic I recognized the brilliance of how the author chose to illustrate the concepts. Isaiah is difficult but this book has done a great job of providing a historical context and a ton of diverse commentary from subject matter experts.

This is well researched. At first I was a little disappointed because I was expecting more structure; in the end, however, Bassett provides the reader with exactly what the reader is looking for - a context and reference points that bring meaning to the terminology in Isaiah.

It discusses voice, data, fax, video and multimedia technologies, systems, and applications in great detail, and in the LAN, MAN, and WAN domains. The handbook explores every relevant technology, standard, and application in the telecom and datacom space….It is exceptionally well-written in Horak’s plain-English, commonsense style, making it just as helpful to the neophyte and layperson as to the serious student or seasoned IT professional. Horak makes liberal use of well-constructed graphics to illustrate system and network architectures, topologies, and applications.
It is hard to make a valid direct comparison to this book. The Irwin Handbook of Telecommunications, by James Harry Green, is good, but less complete, less technical, and drier, if such a combination is possible. The Voice & Data Communications Handbook, by Regis “Bud” Bates, is written at a lower level; and, the Essential Guide to Telecommunications, by Annabel Dodd, at a much lower level. These latter two books are breezy reads and appeal more to a mass market than to a serious student or professional. From frequency division multiplexing to the invention of the Strowger switch by a disgruntled undertaker to the origin of wire "gauge," the book is a great trip down memory lane for us old-timers and a necessary piece of technology background for neophytes. However, the book isn't just history. It's more of an encyclopedia that includes current topics as of the publication date in 2007. As such, is serves as a great foundation for topics like application delivery and virtualization. As we move forward with new ideas, this historical context is mandatory to making sure that the mistakes of the past aren't repeated. And this book is a great resource for providing that context.

This book is the top center of my telecom book shelf. Although I have only had it for a few months, some wear is already beginning to show because of overuse. It is organized simply and logically into 15 chapters, from the fundamentals to regulation. There are diagrams and illustrations as necessary, but not enough to make it look like a comic book. Most technology books fall into one of two categories inane or arcane. Horak's book is written in clear English, understandable by the unwashed masses, but covers highly technical concepts without glossing over the necessary details. Best of all, even though Horak is a Bell veteran, the book is acronym friendly. (Bell heads have a tendency to cling to acronyms, even converting them to verbs on occasion.) Horak uses acronyms, to be sure, not gratuitously; they are an essential part of the telecom scene. If you can only have one book on voice and data communications, this is the book to have.

A professional "Must Have"

I have been a telecom professional for more than 30 years and I never thought any single reference book could surpass "Newton's Telecom Dictionary" for simplicity, accuracy and value.
But Ray Horak's "Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook" doesn't just exceed expectations; it raises the bar for any other authors who might consider entering the telecom reference book arena. This book has become the new "Bible" on my reference shelf. Mr. Horak obviously posesses an encyclopedic knowledge of the technology and general industry. He is able to express what he knows in terms that will be understood by the novice as well as the seasoned professional.
This book is a "must have" for anyone working in the telecom / IT industry. Add it to your Christmas wish list today. Or, skip the next telecom conference that you hoped to attend and just buy this book instead. You'll get more lasting value from the book.

Outstanding Choice

I've been on the data side of data/voice my whole career, but with the convergence of both into a single network approach, I found I needed to get more in-depth background on the telecomm side. I searched amazon.com thoroughly and finally found this book. I didn't know what to think when I ordered it--whether it would meet my needs or not--because there just wasn't enough info to be had in the description. But be that as it may, this book has met and exceeded whatever expectations I then had.

It's written in a straightforward manner. And although the author makes attempts at humor, he's not altogether good at it. But regardless, his writing style presents a virtually seamless effort in combining intricate detail within simple and succinct writing. So far, I haven't been left behind intellectually; but likewise, it hasn't left me feeling like he's dumbed it down to a fifth-grade level either. Yes, I have an extensive background in data, and that helps me. But the good news is that my old knowledge is now being augmented with more in-depth understanding about everything telecomm. And that's exactly what I was hoping for.

Obviously, the book does delve into the data side--it has to. But the overall picture I'm left with on both sides is now much more robust; much broader and more complete. This nugget was just what I needed.

Note that the typeface is fairly small and there are 730 pages, not including appendices. The information is organized very well in the 1.1.1.1-style format. There's an excellent index I've already used to my advantage, and an extensive list of acronyms and abbreviations that helps out a lot. There are a few minor editing mistakes, but not nearly enough to distract the conscientous reader.

I wish all technical materials were this well done. Overall an outstanding choice for those who want a deeper understanding of the telecommunications world.

Better than the Internet!

Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook contains fifteen chapters and covers a wide variety of topics. The book can be recommended for different audiences, starting from students, which decided to become Electrical Engineers, as well as for engineers and managers, and technicians who need always to have a reliable source of information. It is a timely encyclopedic work and will remain so for many years! It also is a perfect companion to Horak's other excellent work, Webster's New World Telecom Dictionary, also published by Wiley in 2007.

Horak is an independent telecom consultant. He is active in litigation support as a consulting expert and testifying expert, often in cases involving intellectual property such as patent, copyright, and trademark and service infringement. He has authored five telecom books and written of hundreds of technical articles, white papers, case studies, and solution briefs.

Vladimir Kaminsky, PhD is a President of Practel, Inc, a consulting company that is specializing in advanced communications technologies and network design.

ALIENS: INHUMAN CONDITION Is A Perfect Nightmare

The world presented from the original ALIEN motion picture has always been just so rich for storytelling. It's big and broad enough to incorporate horror, science fiction, drama, and - if done right - even light comedy while, all the while, still possessing the ability to comment on the human condition. Why? Well, that's because ALIEN is so full of life. It has humans; it has aliens; and it also has these synthetic beings - part android, part biological - and where these various forms come into conflict with one another offers any writer or creator some terrific playground to play in, all the while never losing sight that the monsters are never very far away.

(NOTE: The following review will contain minor spoilers necessary solely for the discussion of plot and character. If you're the kind of reader who prefers a review entirely spoiler-free, then I'd encourage you to skip down to the last two paragraphs for my final assessment. If, however, you're accepting of a few modest hints at `things to come,' then read on ...)

Jean DuPaul has survived a dark tragedy that so few have. She spent three weeks cornered by in the darkness by full-grown Aliens. But her survival has not been without some cost: her `mate' is dead, her future is uncertain, and her sanity is tenuous. When the powers that be at Weiland-Yutani decide that Socialization Specialist DuPaul is now expendable to the long-term mission, she finds herself coming face-to-face with her worst nightmare. Will she run from it ... or will she instead embrace her shattered destiny?

INHUMAN CONDITION is exactly the kind of story I'd love to see brought to the silver screen, not so much because it offers a big-adventure premise but because it delivers a big-picture idea.

In this story, the Aliens are somewhat circumstantial - much as they were in the first ALIEN film - allowing the flawed human characters to occupy center stage. They're here, and they're always a threat, but there's a reciprocal danger lying in wait amongst the Earthling social classes that's just as dire and (somewhat) despicable. John Layman's story is so richly textured - commenting equally on humanity and inhumanity within this microcosm existence - that there's clearly something in here for everyone: scares, dread, and even social commentary. It's precisely what most good horror films these days are missing - it enlists a sense of humanity while balancing a succinct, didactic story in a future setting. It has everything you'd want in an ALIENS movie and then some.

Also, Sam Keith's artwork provides the story with another layer completely. I'm not art expert in the slightest, but much of INHUMAN is sprinkled with faces and bodies and shapes that don't quite look `normal.' These are ordinary human beings, but they're given a slightly distorted presentation, not all that unlike some of the political cartoons of the late 1900's and early 20th century. Features like chins and ears and noses come with slight exaggerations, and what I found so endearing about it is that you - as the reader - are allowed to make of that what you will. Personally, I thought it was a wonderful commentary about how things aren't quite what they seem in life, but I'll leave it up to you to draw whatever conclusions you might from it.

I've followed this franchise in Dark Horse print over the years, but I've rarely been as jazzed after reading one installment as I am with this one. In less than sixty pages, INHUMAN will make you excited for a thoughtful and intelligent return to the ALIENS universe, showing you all of the things you've come to know in such a way that you may not quite recognize them the same way ever again.

ALIENS: INHUMAN CONDITION is published by Dark Horse Comics. The story and lettering are provided by John Layman; with the art and cover illustration by Sam Kieth; with colors done by Kieth and John Kalisz. This book bears a cover price of $10.99, and, yes, that's a bargain compared to what enjoyment I took out of it.

HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE. The original ALIEN set the standard for smart space-based horror stories mirrored with a soft commentary on the human condition; while the other films may've been better or worse received than Ridley Scott's original, none have quite matched his intensity for delivering a complete product that made you look at the world differently. ALIENS: INHUMAN CONDITION brings this saga full circle so far as I'm concerned by bringing audiences an artsy shocker that reminds folks monsters may never be quite what they seem. In fact, you may be sitting next to one right now ...

One of the best Alien stories ever

I love John Layman's books. He can write comedy, he can write action, and now I know he can write something like this. Something layered and well developed that elicits a lot of emotion and thought in the reader.

This is a unique story in the Alien universe that mainly focuses on man's view on androids. There's a lot of solid development in such a short story, and a fantastic unexpected ending.

This is a must read.

About the Author

David L. Buckeridge, MD, PhD, is Assistant Professor and a Canadian Research Chair in the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health at McGill University. His research interests include public health informatics and surveillance systems, outbreak simulation, and the influence of surveillance information on decision-making in public health.

Not only did I purchase this textbook late in the course because I was on the fence about its necessity, I wish I had not purchased it all. It is a very difficult read and the pictures and diagrams are eligible. I mean seriously how can we as doctoral students develop surveillance snapshots without a reference and then this be the only book for the course? Well that was the case and this book is used in Walden University's Health Informatics and Disease Surveillance course. Skip this buy!
