In an apparent homage to Aesop, the story begins with Squirrel anxiously gathering acorns for the winter while Bird flies around without any worries or responsibilities until he discovers that he's being stalked by a malicious cat. Despite the fact that he doesn't want to get involved, he finds himself coming to Bird's assistance and, after Squirrel's acorn trove is destroyed, the pair sets off on a southward adventure to escape the cold of winter and the cat's wrath. On the way, they encounter much comical misfortune and learn important lessons about friendship, teamwork, and enjoying life to its fullest. Young readers will enjoy the dynamic between the quirky duo and the humorous situations (and the clever yet slapstick ways in which they deal with them). He also illustrated The Monstore by Tara Lazar.

A WOW Moment for my 8yr old Grandson

Well, I found this book for my 8 yr. old grandson to read and he is just starting 3rd grade. He has never "read" a book all by himself cover to cover and for the first time; that's exactly what he did. He sat down, looked at it and started to read and then proceeded to go sit in the living room and did not put it down until he had read the whole book. He was over there on the couch laughing and just enjoying the book. My grandson is ADHD and I have always read to him and he does read usually every other page for me, but has not really gotten into a story like he did this one. I would HIGHLY recommend that you get this book for your child to read. PS I wish there was another book made in this series to get for him as he asked me to look and I would have ordered it for him...

Just-right graphic novel for budding independent readers

This is one of the very few graphic novels you will find that a beginning/intermediate reader can read from cover to cover (okay, maybe they might skip a few words, but they'll be able to "take in" the full story). My kid is a mid-level 2nd grade reader, and it is tough to find books he can read on his own. The story is sweet and funny in places, but the author's accomplishment lies in how accessible it is.

Write More About Bird & Squirrel, Please!

It pays to make friends with your local librarian. They might lend you silly books! After chatting with our school librarian about my current reading project of graphic novels, she lent me one of her favorites: Bird and Squirrel on the Run by James Burks. It's hilarious and cute.

Bird and Squirrel on the Run features three main characters, of which I am most unlike Bird. When Bird first shows up on the pages, he's flying around singing about what a wonderful day it is and greeting everyone he meets. Haven't we all met perky people like this? Next thing Bird is getting Squirrel into trouble AND joking their way out of trouble. Ah, wouldn't I love to achieve this finesse? Later, when Bird and Squirrel decide hitting the road is their safest option, Bird never falters in his optimism. The two can fly, they can walk, they can sleep under the stars.... What I admire most about Bird is that even when Squirrel shoots down all of Bird's ideas, Bird is not fazed. Nope, instead he asks a most sensible question: "So, what's it going to be? Hit the open road with me or stay here and starve to death?" In asking this question, Bird proves that those "the sun is always shining" people have their use: they also keep the rest of going, going, going when all we see is clouds. Yay, for our positive friends!

The character whom I most resemble is Squirrel. When Bird first meets Squirrel, he asks, "Who are you hiding from?" Squirrel not only tells him Cat, but also elaborates: "Don't you know cats are responsible for 47 percent of all squirrel deaths in a year?" See, Squirrel not only knows his fears, but he has well thought out reasons for those fears. There's more. When Bird asks Squirrel to hang out, Squirrel tells him in no uncertain terms, "I've got work to do." And, yes, Squirrel follows up with an explanation. "Winter is almost here and if I don't store up enough food ... I'll STARVE!" See, Squirrel not only knows what chores he needs to do, but he has logical explanations why they're more important than enjoying a beautiful day. Last example! After everything goes wrong, Squirrel has all these super fantastic excuses for not joining Bird: He doesn't like to travel; New things give him stomachaches; He has a fear of meteorites. Not only am I Squirrel, but many of my students are. They will so relate to Squirrel and yet (I suspect) find him so silly because of all his many, many, many fears. Incidentally, my husband admires me because of my strong work ethic, but I love him because of his spontaneous ways.

Then there's Cat. Shh! Don't tell our foster dog, but I see a little of Cat in him. Our foster dog has a stubborn streak in him when it comes to getting what he wants. And so does Cat! It doesn't matter where Bird and Squirrel lead him, but Cat is determined to hunt them down. He falls into a waterfall, ventures into a thunderstorm, waits outside a mole hole.... anything in the name of catching Bird and Squirrel. Cat also has a scary big mouth, big teeth, big eyes. In that way he's different from our foster dog, although our foster dog does have a disgruntled growl. At this point, I'll end the comparisons because I want the best for our foster dog, but am not so sure I feel the same about that nasty Cat.

Hmm, now that I have reread Bird and Squirrel on the Run, I might just have to delay returning it to our librarian. I can think of some fifth-grade boys who will find this graphic novel a hoot. They might also like trying to draw the characters, for which instructions can be found on Burks' website. What a delightful loan!

3.5 stars; decent conclusion but ends abruptly

This is the third and final book in The Good Neighbors graphic novel series by Holly Black and Ted Naifeh. It was a decent, if abrupt ending to the series. I enjoyed learning how Rue dealt with all of the issues facing her.

The land of fairy has taken over Rue's city. Rue has to decide if she will take her place by her mother's side and rule in Fairy or if she will try to save the city she loves. Rue is not human, so is it her responsibility to try and save humanity?

I enjoyed the story; it was interesting to watch Rue try to reconcile her new identity with her past life. She is torn between helping her human friends and taking her place as heir to the Fairy throne. There is a bit of mystery as she tries to find a way to save the city from Fairy.

Everything is tied up very well, but the pacing is a bit off throughout the book. The story develops well in the first half and then bam! the ending is abrupt and kind of slaps the reader in the face. I was left feeling a bit startled and kind of thinking "wow that was tied up quickly". It seemed like a lot of build up for such a simple and abrupt solution.

The characters were so-so; there are a lot of them in the story and I never became all that attached to them. The drawing does a good job of distinguishing between characters and showing facial expressions. The story is drawn in black and white and decently done; it conveyed the surroundings well and did a good job of helping the story along. I wouldn't say the illustration is beautiful or awe-inspiring but it is okay.

Overall a decent conclusion to this series. I liked that all the loose ends were tied up, but felt like the story ended very abruptly. I never engaged with the characters very well and felt like the pacing was off. Still if you have read the first two books in the series, I would go ahead and read this one as it provides a satisfying ending. I tentatively recommend this series to those who enjoy urban fantasy stories.

Satisfying conclusion to the Good Neighbors series

Holly Black is well-known for writing edgy teen and kids prose books like the Spiderwick Chronicles and Tithe. When she decided to create a graphic novel series called The Good Neighbors, she pulled out all the stops, creating one of the most vivid and compulsively readable YA series around. The third and final book more than lives up to the dark, brooding promise of the first two books, giving Rue Silver's journey a fitting conclusion.

The series was built on Rue's discovery that she was half human and half faerie. This startling mystery was coupled with haunting visions, a missing mother, and the revelation that her grandfather was an evil faerie overlord seeking to take over the world. The constant struggle for Rue has always been which side she belonged on: Should she take her rightful place at her grandfather's side, or should she fight alongside her friends against the forces of evil?

Black's writing is strong throughout all three books, but even better, it is never dumbed down for its audience. The Good Neighbors has always been dark and suspenseful, and it truly lives up to that in Kind, yet it remains perfectly suited to its teen audience.

Artist Ted Naifeh is just as much a star in these books as Black. His staunch black-and-white illustrations give life to the series vividly. Under his sturdy pencils, the series has been able to really take flight. You can see the anguish thoroughly expressed on Rue's face as she struggles with the dual sides of her nature, unsure of what it all means but struggling to maintain the humanity she has always known.

Kind wraps up all the loose ends of the storyline. The resolution--which I won't give away here--is fitting and earned. It's sad to see such a good series come to a close, but here's hoping that Black will be back soon with something new and equally enticing.

Awesome trilogy

This third and final book in the graphic novel series by Naifeh and Black, ties the story together in an amazing way. With even darker narrative and incredible illustrations this book is awesome.

Graphix is the graphic novel arm of Scholastic press, most famous for Jeff Smith's Bone. This book is the third in a trilogy from Holly Black, one of the authors of the Spiderwick Chronicles. The series called The Good Neighbors began with Kin two years ago and Kith last fall. Now the story continues and concludes this year with Kind. This is an incredible graphic novel. The story that started strong and compelling in book one, becomes even better in Kith, becomes absolutely enthralling in book three. A year might be a long time to wait for a graphic novel of 110 pages but the story and artwork make the wait more than worth it.

This is the concluding story of Rue Silver. Previously we found out that Rue thought she was a typical student - she had good friends, hung out, went to class and broke into abandoned buildings to climb and explore in them. But after finding out that her mother was really of the faery folk, she finds out that her grandfather Aubrey wants to take over the town. He wants to surround the whole area in a spell and separate it from the human world. Rue is torn in her loyalties - her family among the faeries or her friends and all the humans in the town. An epic battle is brewing between man and faery and Rue is stuck right in the middle. But now her Grandfather is dead by his own evil spell to separate the town and hide it from the world. Her mother is ruling the faery world. Her friends have been marked for protection, but the rest of the humans are fair game for the faery's entertainment and diversions. But some of them are fighting back.

The Dark edge found in the first two books becomes even more so in this third book. But Rue is also finding an inner strength she never knew she had. She starts to put together the final steps of her Grandfather's plans, and might have a way to help most of the humans get back to our world. But it will require timing, help from her friends and a great personal sacrifice.

It is an awesome book and an amazing trilogy! Well done Black and Naifeh!

Well written. Most of the book is very depressing but he offers hope at the end. It is a warning to all about the coming threat to America. All you have to do is look at what is happening in Europe today to see what is coming to America if we don't take steps to stop it now. In the end he outlines at least the minimum we need to do.

Fantastic book

This is a really great book. I enjoyed it a lot and plan to read more of this author's books. Although the cover blurb suggests its about sex, drugs, and rock n roll, it's not. It is a well written story about a rock star, a concert promoter, a PR guy, a bestselling author who had not written anything in ages, the groupie who gets by, and many other unforgettable characters. This book takes the reader into Sunset Strip of the early seventies. It takes the reader into the lives of all the people involved and you see each as a person, not just as a caricature. It starts with a rockstar who is scared of heights skydiving as a publicity stunt and ends with a full fledged riot at the Fabulous Forum. Good stuff.
