Grade 9 Up-An affecting memoir told in verse, this work launches a promising young poet. It is more than the recollection of faltering family life; it also deals with Merrell's acceptance of his homosexuality. It is about sons and brothers, friends and lovers. The individual poems enhance one another yet stand alone. The language is measured, doled out carefully, artfully. He writes about his mother: "She's known, she'll say, since I was five/and I'll want to ask why/she didn't tell me sooner, but instead ask/if she's okay." Memories of when he and his father almost speak of his closet homosexuality, and when the moment passes are related in poignant phrases. The poems reveal the author's journey through childhood through the worrisome pit of teen sexuality, made all the more harrowing when a lover dies of AIDS. He silently carries around his fear for ages. He writes, "Admitting/the danger is a danger in itself." This memoir is as difficult as it is beautiful. Merrell writes, "Years later I'll wonder how I didn't know I was lonely when everyone around me did." His sophisticated verse and compelling story will capture attention as it stirs compassion.

Merrell has packed a lot of memories into his 22 years: his parents' divorce and remarriages ("I was seven, and remember you loving each other, then not"); realization of his homosexuality ("You sort of know. In that vague way you know you want to write or paint"); and his own failed and new relationships. He has also packed away a lot of wisdom about life, death, self-acceptance, and the vagaries of love and lust. Likewise, he has honed his writing craft, and his free-verse memoir is rich with metaphor, words carefully chosen to say enough but not too much. In one beautiful poem, for example, he alludes to death as that first terrifying jump off the diving board: "Is that what Heaven is like--four seconds and a splash?" About the Author
At 22, Billy Merrell is the youngest author to date published by the Push Imprint of Scholastic Inc. Merrell, who grew up in Jacksonville Florida, began writing poetry around eighth grade. He had a better grasp of rhyme and meter than the other students in his classes, and as a result, the teacher began giving him more challenging poetry assignments rather than less expressive work. It wasn’t until his sophomore year of high school that Merrell began to write about his own feelings, and recognized writing poetry as a liberating activity.

Merrell is recent graduate of the University of Florida with a B.A. in English. During the summer, earlier in his college career, Merrell was hired as the first PUSH Writing Intern. During this summer internship, Merrell came to New York City and began work on his first book. The culmination of his work with PUSH is talking in the dark, a memoir composed of poetry that documents a story of growing up, coming out and exploring love. As a gay man himself, Merrell sought to write a book that he felt could have been of use to him as a teenage boy coming out. It is “an affecting memoir told in verse, this work launches a promising young poet….[Merrell’s] sophisticated verse and compelling story will capture attention as it stirs compassion.” —School Library Journal

The first gay book I've related to. Life-changing.

I'm a lesbian. I'm 20, not really a teen. But a friend told me about Billy Merrell's TALKING IN THE DARK because she knew I loved poetry, and it has since become one of my favorite contemporary collections. And not only that, but I found in Merrell a place to feel comfortable. Not only because I'm gay and so is he, but because he happens to be gay, and so do I. He is so wise for his age. My mother is reading it now, and that is what she told me.
The poems are smart, emotional, revealing. Merrell strips his life down to amazing, telling lines that left me wanting it to go on and on. I've read it twice already and am taking my time reading it a third time now, and there's always something new and beautiful to find in the rereading. My favorite poetry is personal, careful, and spiritual (not religious, necessarily, but intensely in touch with the world). That's what the poems in TALKING IN THE DARK are like.
If you know someone, anyone, who reads poetry, this is a book that will affect them, always.

why isn't it in more stores!? my favorite book!

~*AMAZING*~ My girlfriend loved TALKING IN THE DARK and MADE me read it, which I don't usually do. She said I would like it because I like poetry, which is sort of true lately. But it took me months to find it in a store before my mom bought it online for me... since I don't have a credit cared, duh. But it's great. I haven't read anything like it before. And my girlfriend likes me to read her parts, especially SHHH and HISTORYS. Guys, buy this book for your girlfriends (or boyfriends).

i read "talking in the dark" over a year ago and it has still stuck with me. even though this memoir is told through poetry, it is very easy to read and understand. you can really relate to what merrell has gone through. this book is definately an amazing undiscovered gem. i highly recommend it.

Three comic artists adapt the R.L. Stine 'Goosebumps' stories to graphic novel format for young readers - and promise to attract even reluctant readers with its black and white visual embellishments. Here are excellent, eerie drawings to illustrate a girl's dangerous visit to her grandparents, and a case of curious siblings unleashing a monster in Southern California. While color might have worked even better, Goosebumps: Creepy Creatures is still a top pick for elementary-level readers who appreciate the thrill of the chill.

Fun Book That Keep 'Em Reading

This is an excellent book choice for 'hesitant' readers.

Written at the nearly 3rd Grade level (see notes below) there is lots of action in this book, without a lot of dialog and narrative.

The first story is "The Werewolf of Fever Swamp". Like the other stories, the graphics are colorless; which is not to say simple. It's nice grayscale which conveys the mood and scariness quite well. The second story is "The Scarecrow Walks at Midnight", and if anything the artwork is even better. The final story is "The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena". It's more humorous and the artwork is more retro, reminding me somehow of Daddy Warbucks and Little Orphan Annie, only without color.

The official Accelerated Reading designation for this book is 2.7, which means that the average 2nd Grader in the 7th month of school should be able to read this without getting stymied by the vocabulary.

Way better than I thought it would be

I found this book in a bookstore in a mall that I visit and thought that it would be a neat present for my Dad, who enjoyed horror and crime comix during the fifties.

Of course, I just had to read it too, and it was way better than I thought that it would be as I had heard some negative things about Stine's work from other adults.

This trade paperback contains three black and white graphic adaptations of three R. L. Stine Goosebumps novels. I have never read the novels and had to judge the book and its stories on their own merits. I also agree with one reviewer that these adaptations might have worked better in color, but you can't have everything.

--The first novel adaptation is "The Werewolf Of Fever Swamp" and is adapted and illustrated by Gabriel Hernandez and is forty-four pages long and is the story of Grady, who along with his sister Emily, and his father and mother have just moved into a new home in the Florida swamps. There Grady meets the swamp hermit who lurks around the swamp; Will Blake and Cassie O'Rourke who are his neighbors and who are his age, and most importantly, sometime during one of the nights a wolf/dog, to be named Wolf, which befriends Grady.

Soon after Wolf's entrance into the story strange things start to happen, and Grady sees what he believes is a werewolf. Grady's family thinks that Wolf is too wild, and is doing the damage that is seen around Grady's house. Is it Wolf, or something else? And why does the werewolf seem to be stalking Grady? There's a nice twist to the story in the end.

The art irritated me at first, but then grew on me. Hernandez does a great job in the end, and I really liked his rendition of Wolf, and he paces the story nicely. Good work. Five stars.

--The next story is forty-two pages and is "The Scarecrow Walks At Midnight" and is adapted and illustrated by Greg Ruth and tells the story of Jodie and her brother Mark (nice name there) who are going to visit their Grandparents farm, which is also inhabited and worked by the developmentally challenged Stanley and his son Sticks. As they settle in, Stanley claims that the scarecrows walk, and wouldn't you know . . .

At first Jodie and Mark don't believe Stanley, but soon enough they see proof of this themselves. Things start going wrong, as we find out that Stanley has created the scarecrows, and he's loosing control. Ruth, like Hernandez has an unusual art style. Starting with linework and filling it out with some paint washing. Ruth is especially good at depicting the shadows and mood of nighttime, and his individualistic panels have a dramatic sense to them that makes the story exciting and suspenseful. Filled with deadly scarecrows, creepy dream sequences, and witchcraft, this may not be for very young children, but kids who like a good scary time will love it. Five stars.

--The last story is forty-three pages long and is "The Abominable Snowman Of Pasadena" and is adapted by Scott Morse. This story is about brother and sister Luis and Ana Garcia and who accompany their professional photographer father on a trip to Alaska to try to photograph the Abominable Snowman. They succeed more than they imagine, and end up capturing one and bringing it home in a trunk. After the first two stories this adaptation was a crushing disappointment. The artwork is all caricature, and is just awful. It has no mood, the characters are ugly, the art is garish, and the whole thing looks like it was drawn by a blind man. Then there's the story itself, the story just makes no sense at all, Luis is obnoxious, and the story ending has several clichéd and terrible twists to it.

Many will probably like it `cuz it gots a monster, but in the end, it just wasn't very good. Something got lost in the translation I guess. Zero stars.

Morse's story brings down the average of this collection. Still, this anthology still gets four stars because the first two stories are just so good. Young readers will love this sturdy, built to be read and re-read, graphic comix trade paperback.

Oh yeah, Dad liked this book, although he didn't like the last story either.

Gehring is Senior Lecturer for Clinical Psychology at the University of Basle and Health of the Section of Methodology and Evaluation at the Department of Social and Preventative Medicine, University of Zurich. He is the author of the Family System Test (FAST). Marianne Debry is a Professor at the University of Liege and Head of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychology. She has translated the FAST manual into French. Peter K. Smith is Professor of Psychology at Goldsmiths College, University of London and Head of the Unit for School and Family Studies.

This book was required for a class of mine, though it was easier to read than most textbooks. It goes into depth about how to work with children who are experiencing grief and loss, though I think that it could be an informational book for people who are trying to talk to their own children about death as well.

Ponderous

Ratio of academic sludge to remotely useful information, even for high level advanced driver training or driver instructor training is woeful. Very disappointing. Seems obvious that this was written to satisfy some publish or perish requirement. A PHD in psychology is a must in order to have a chance of being able to get much out of this small tomb.

Great Read For Young Readers!

I've read a lot of books by Colleen Coble (including her adult Rock Harbor series - she's one of my favorite authors) and also some of Robin Caroll's books, so I was really excited when I heard about Rock Harbor Search & Rescue!

The characters were nice and my favorites were Bree and the SAR dogs (yes, I count them as characters). I did get a little annoyed with Emily's dad when he seemed to immediately believe the worst about her and for the way he reacted when she asked their guests questions. I also didn't like when things in the story seemed to be repeated needlessly.

The mystery was good and, while I myself didn't have any concrete guesses, I loved how the reader could actually guess who was behind the theft. I really liked the whole aspect about Emily's mother in Rock Harbor Search & Rescue - it added a nice element to the book.

Overall, a good read. Even though I'm over the target age, I did still enjoy Rock Harbor Search & Rescue. I definitely think it's a great book (and recommend it) for young readers who enjoy mysteries - or anyone that likes middle grade novels. I look forward to reading the next book in this series, Lost and Found.

Cool cover art, but not cool story

The summary of "Rock Harbor Search and Rescue" is admittedly intriguing, for a middle-grade fiction novel, although the book did not become a favorite for me.

Emily O'Reilly is an almost-fourteen-year-old girl living in Michigan, with a passion for dogs in search and rescue work. She volunteers on rescue missions with her stepmom. She even wants to buy her own puppy and start training it for SAR work. Unfortunately, a crime is committed in Rock Harbor, and because Emily was in the wrong place at the wrong time, the suspicion points straight towards her.

The Cons:
Many times in the book, the parents hinder their daughter's curiosity, as she attempts to clear her good name. So, Emily is forced to go behind their backs to get her questions answered. She even "sneaks" online to do research, making sure her parents don't find out. These actions struck me as odd, not being good honorable morals for kids.

The other thing that I didn't find appealing is the girly discussions which pass between Emily and her best friend, Olivia, about certain private topics. If there had just been less of it, I could have enjoyed the story better.

The Pros:
It's a story with a lot of fun elements, especially the dogs, and being able to learn about K-9 search and rescue. I'm glad that it does have a Christian theme running throughout, and that Emily takes time to say prayers to God. Her faith is an important part of the story, because she is surrounded by the superstitions of the Native American Ojibwa tribe, and their grisly Windigo creature which is said to live in the nearby woods. Since the crime she is suspected of is interwoven into the Ojibwa beliefs, she is stepping into unknown territory with only God by her side.

The Author:
Colleen Coble has previously written a Rock Harbor series for adults. She is now introducing this new series for tweens, which ties in with the same characters from her original series. Book #2 of the tween Rock Harbor series will be published in October.

Good story

Search and Rescue follows Emily, a young girl who has a desire to grow up to work on a search and rescue team like her stepmother. She is saving towards purchasing her own puppy to begin training when a valuable necklace is stolen and she is blamed. The rest of the story fleshes out Emily's attempt to clear her name and find out who really took the necklace after all.

The story itself is fun, readable, and well written. The authors do a nice job of capturing small town life in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and the specific challenges that come with it. A couple parts may have slightly stretched the realm of reality (in a book featuring search and rescue, it becomes necessary for an inordinate number of people to get lost and need to be found), but they did not take away from the storyline.

Two critiques, one small and one slightly larger. One of Emily's main conflicts in the story is her fear that a legendary monster that the local tribes tell stories about might indeed be true. Even though this runs directly contrary to Emily's faith in Christ, she nonetheless struggles an inordinate amount with this for a girl who exhibits a lot of grown-up tendencies. More disturbing, and the only thing keeping me from recommending this book with absolutely no reservations, is that Emily is a little boy crazy. She is thirteen and has two major crushes in the period covered in the book. Very little is brought out about this as it relates to the Christian faith, the purpose of dating, and Biblical principles. Instead, she is simply described as a boy-crazy, typical teenage girl. If this was a secular book, that wouldn't be an issue, but doesn't Christ call us to something a little more than being just typical people?

A good read, all things considered.

I would give Search and Rescue 4 out of 5 stars.

About the Author

J. R. McNeill is Professor of History at Georgetown University, where he held the Cinco Hermanos Chair in Environmental and International Affairs before becoming University Professor in 2006. His book Something New under the Sun: An Environmental History of the Twentieth-Century World was listed by The Times as one of the best science books ever written. The book was cowinner of the World History Association and Forest History Society book prizes and runner-up for the BP Natural World book prize. McNeill has authored a number of other award-winning books on environmental history, and in 2010 he was awarded the Toynbee Prize for “academic and public contributions to humanity.”

Erin Stewart Mauldin is a PhD candidate in US environmental history at Georgetown University. She is currently writing her dissertation on the environmental history of the Reconstruction period in the southern United States.

Interesting and thought provoking...

This little tomb of knowledge provides anyone interested in Latino studies, sexuality studies, queer studies, sociology, cultural anthropology and very intimate and academic view of Public Sex within the macho dominated Latino culture and sub-culture.
Written towards an educated and/or academic audience, this book offers insight into the sexual norms, abnormalities, practices, taboos, alternative lifestyles and distinct culture of sex.
This book is highly recommended for anyone working within the HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care, & Treatment field and should be required reading for students of Latino (Ethnic/Area) studies.

Public Sex in Latin Society

Author Jacob Schifter, PhD provides an eye-opening account into a subject matter that is too often ignored in Latino culture. Schifter utilizes both quantitative and qualitative research methods into uncovering this phenomenon in Costa Rica. A qualitative scholar myself, it was these participant's accounts that I read directly (some funny, some very sad). Schifter makes a good argument stating that these participants experiences of childhood sexual abuse are what dictates these participants current sexuality as adults. (Can't say I agree 100% with this, but it is a convincing argument nonetheless. Also, while I recognize that this an all too important work I question if this work really reflects the attitudes of all of Latin Society).
Schifter uncovers locations for public sexual activity in Costa Rica. The difference between Cacheros and Locusts. (Cacheros are male prostitutes that are not considered homosexual as long as they aren't penetrated; Locusts utilize their sexual allure to attract paying male customers and often rob or murder them). Rounding out the chapter Schifter shows the attitudes of police officers toward gay Latino men, which is a direct reflection of the country's own homophobia and hatred.
