Book was advertised as like new condition. It had some highlighting, writing, and bent corners. Overall a good purchase. The highlighting was not that bad and most of the writing was identification of the previous owner. The book serves the purpose that it was purchased for adequately and it was less than I would have paid through the college bookstore even with upgraded shipping. Had to have the book since the college bookstore ran out. I will definitely be back again when it is time to have books for next semester.

Allied health practice issues and trends in the new millenni

Allied health professions are not well defined, even though there has been several attempts to do so. The US Public Health Service Act defines allied health professions as: a health professional (other than registered nurse or physician assistant), who has received a certificate, an associate's degree, a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, a doctoral degree or post baccalaureate training in a science relating to health care, who shares in the responsibility for the delivery of health care services or related services, including (1) services related to the identification, evaluation and prevention of disease and disorder, (2) dietary and nutrition services, (3) health promotion services, (4) rehabilitaion services, or (5) health systems management service and who has not received a degree of doctor of medicine, a degree of doctor of osteopathy, a degree of doctor of veterinary medicine, a degree of doctor of optometry, a degree of podiatric medicine, a degree of doctor of pharmacy, a graduate degree in public health, a degree of doctor of chiropractic, a degree in health administration, a doctoral degree in clinical psychology or a degree of social work or equivaleent.

Under all circumstances this field has been growing fast and by 2005 about 4 million new job in this field will be added in the US and comprise 60% of the health care workforce. Pedro Lecca is professor and dean of the College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences at Howard University in Washington DC, Peggy Valentine associate dean and Kevin Lyons the associate dean of the College of Health Professions at Thomas Jefferson University, who together with 23 contributors have compiled 19 chapters about this field. This comprehensive book discuss topics like managed care, primary health care, rehabilitation, computer technology, drug information and educational issues.

Fiction that touches the soul

Although this is JoAnn Jolley's first novel, it's clear from the start that she knows how to write fiction. Her style is clear and transparent, telling the story in a strong voice without interfering with the reader's access to it. Her dialogue is crisp and believable, her characters are distinct and realistic, and the events of the story move the reader to genuine emotion without becoming maudlin or saccharine.
Paula Donroe, the protagonist, works long hours at her advertising agency. She puts so much of herself into her work that she pushes aside the nagging feeling that all is not right with her two sons. The writer is not saying that working women should drop everything and hover over their children; rather, she has created a character who is too worldly for her own good, who worships Mammon rather than God. Paula, like so many of us, must overcome her own pride and arrogance before she can find the peace she so desperately needs.
I found the book well written and emotionally satisfying. It's the best novel of its kind I've read for many years.

In this skeptical look at the Internet, Moore, who teaches English at Penn State, attempts to cut through the jargonish flackery surrounding the Net to determine its basic virtues and drawbacks. Inspired by Thoreau's Walden, Moore sets out to spend a year in the "electronic woods." He visits the Usenet sector, a collection of "newsgroups," or virtual bulletin boards, where people can post messages on subjects of common interest; observes various MUDs (Multi-User Dungeons), online role-playing games popular with college students; discusses political activism on the Net with a Washington bureaucrat and an Irish dissident; and bashfully dabbles in cyber-sex. Detached and decidedly unscientific, Moore illuminates the chasm between the high claims of the digerati and the misadventures of the novice Net user. His homespun approach and silly quips, however, make this a thin polemic.

Moore (English, Pennsylvania State Univ.) here provides a tour of the Internet for those folks who've somehow managed to avoid buying into the hype of online fulfillment. Although he doesn't launch into an anti-net diatribe a la Clifford Stoll (Silicon Snake Oil, LJ 3/1/95), Moore mischievously lays bare some revered 'net features such as MUSHs (multi-user shared hallucination, a type of role-playing game), digital relationships, and e-mail, and, in a hilarious encounter, he poses as a female and attempts to have cybersex. Still, Moore-whose given name is indeed Dinty-has some good things to say about virtual communities; it's just that-aside from anonymity, convenience, and the sheer number of people who make up these communities-they're not a whole lot different than what's outside our front doors. This well-written, humorous primer should find a comfortable home in most public libraries.

Definitely not a time waster

I enjoyed going back to 1994 and reading about the advent of some of our now routine virtual lives. Mr. Moore has a delightful way of telling a story, whether about Usenet (heavy in this book) or electronic mail, or the new thing called the World Wide Web. I think this is an excellent quick trip through "where we've been" and I highly recommend it to anyone who takes the internet seriously or as a career.
I wrote to Mr. Moore shortly after I read the book to see if he was planning a follow-up tome. He said he was not, but if he does, I'll be in line to buy it shortly after publication.

Outdated and fairly useless

If you're on amazon.com, odds are you don't need this book. It's outdated, and I can't imagine it was very useful even when it was current. Moore seems to utterly miss the point of most of the internet, and the fact that his "research" is concentrated in the insular world of USENET only makes his view narrower. The only entertaining parts of the book are 1) the cover, and 2) his utter incomprehension of cybersex and "how to do it". But neither of those are worth purchasing the book for. Go for "Cyberville" or "My Tiny Life" instead.

Even faster than predicted, the Internet is growing. In the United States, an estimated 60 million people are now using the Internet to shop, to socialize, to work, and to do research. This is nearly double the number of people who were using the Internet four years ago.

But the Internet is no longer simply a United States phenomenon. Equally amazing and exciting is the rapid growth of the Internet across the globe, from Europe to Africa to Asia. Four years ago it seemed everyone on the Internet was speaking English - now it is becoming a true world community.

I am especially excited to see China beginning to establish an Internet presence. I think the future of China and of China's relationship to the United States will be made better by this new technology, if people use it well.

It will be interesting, however, to see if Asian countries face some of the same prob! ! lems and confusions that Americans have faced. While my understanding is that Chinese users rely on the Internet and e-mail more for research and business than for fun and friendship, I suspect that social and entertainment uses will become more common.
This book is very much about the 'social' and 'human' side of Internet use - how conversations by e-mail differ from conversations when two people are in the same room, how making 'virtual' friends on the internet is different than becoming friends with someone you meet on the street. Is a community of friends who only meet through the computer a true community? Will our computer friends become more important to us than the people who live nearby to us in our towns and villages? As more people in China access the Internet, more of them will explore these same questions.
Americans have been both excited by the Internet and the wealth of knowledge and information that is available, and frightened by the rapid change! ! . Many people worry that there is too much information on ! the Internet, more than anyone could ever use, some of it unreliable or dangerous. Some worry too that the use of e-mail and electronic discussion is breaking down the common bonds that unite people, that electronic friendships are not as strong as face-to-face relationships. Some worry that too much time spent in front of the computer and not enough time out in nature is bad for the human spirit. I am sure users in China will have some of these same questions too.
I teach university classes in the United States, and when I ask young American students what excites them the most about the Internet, they often say "talking to people my age in other countries." Wouldn't it be interesting if American students and Chinese students were in regular daily conversations, not just about world events, but about music and sports?

Some have predicted that the Internet is way to world peace. I suspect this view is an exaggeration, but I do hope that the increased e! ! ase of communication that comes with Internet use will help people from China and the United States -- and people from all countries on the planet - to understand one another better, and to focus on what we have in common more than what sets us apart.
