Review
“Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty.” (Choice, 1 September 2013)
“Messent's readings are always perceptive and his book offers an excellent introduction to a diverse genre.” (The Guardian, 8 March 2013)
“Those interested in the more arcane byways of crime fiction will find this concise but intelligent volume invaluable, with its academic (but accessible) analyses of some of the key texts in the genre. What is perhaps the most valuable aspect of the book is the fact that Peter Messent has managed to unearth new insights into this much written-about subject — no easy task in the 21st century, when a considerable amount of analysis of the field (including, in a modest way, by this writer) is so endemic.” (Crime Time, 27 February 2013)
"...at a stroke this volume joins the library of key texts in the field." (Crime Time, February 2013)"... a good introduction to a prolific genre." (Times Literary Supplement, March 2013)
Review
'An outstanding piece of work that deserves a wide audience. Peter Messent’s The Crime Fiction Handbook is essential reading. I can imagine no better introduction to the genre.’
—David Schmid, University at Buffalo
From the Back Cover
With its compelling blend of murder, mystery, and detection, it should come as no surprise that crime fiction is a hugely popular literary genre. The Crime Fiction Handbook presents a comprehensive introduction to the origins, development, and cultural significance of the crime fiction genre, focusing mainly on its American, British, and Scandinavian forms.
The book’s first main section presents an overview of the subject, addressing the politics of crime fiction and exploring some of its main variants – classical and hard-boiled detective fiction, the private eye and the police novel, and fictions of transgression. The section concludes with an exploration of three key elements of the genre: the links between vision, supervision, and the urban landscape; representations of the body and the acts of violence done to it; and issues both of race and gender.
In-depth readings of fourteen of the most important crime fictions in the Western tradition then follow, beginning with Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” and proceeding from classic works by Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Dashiell Hammett, and Raymond Chandler to contemporary writings by James Ellroy, Thomas Harris, Patricia Cornwell, Ian Rankin, and Stieg Larsson.
The Crime Fiction Handbook offers fascinating insights into the appeal of crime fiction while revealing how the genre both entertains and provides a mirror to the most pressing social issues of the day.

An academic approach to crime fiction...
By FictionFan
This is an academic analysis of crime fiction looking at how it has evolved since its inception, which Messent dates back to Poe's Dupin tales. Messent discusses the different types of crime fiction which he categorises as Classical, Hard Boiled, the Police novel and Transgressor fiction and shows how each category affects and is affected by wider aspects of society such as gender, race and politics. He gives particular importance to the increasing urbanisation of society in the development away from the straightforward murder mystery of early crime fiction towards the more noirish approach of many writers as the 20th century progressed. In the final section, Messent looks in depth at certain books in each of the categories, relating them to his previous analyses.
The book is interesting if a little dry at times. While occasionally I felt that Messent was over-analysing or reading things into the texts that weren't completely justifiable, on the whole his arguments were convincing and well supported with evidence. His analyses are based largely on American fiction with a substantial minority of British writers, especially from the classical era, but with very little from other countries. Messent accepts this himself as a weakness of the book, pointing out that there is so much crime fiction that an exhaustive analysis would be difficult. He expresses the hope that the work he has done in this book will be seen as a jumping off point for future academics to extend the arguments beyond the authors he has chosen.
Overall, I enjoyed the book, particularly the final part with Messent's reading of specific texts such as The Big Sleep, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd etc. Any crime fiction enthusiast will be familiar with the majority of the texts he has chosen and this helps to put his analyses into context. Recommended for anyone who would like to look a little more deeply into the place crime fiction has carved out for itself in literature and, indeed, in the wider context of society as a whole.

The Crime Fiction Handbook
By S Riaz
Crime fiction has always been my favourite genre and I enjoyed this analysis of why it is so popular. The first half of this volume examines the main forms of crime fiction; such as classical detective fiction, hard-boiled fiction and the police novel. Oddly enough, the author largely neglects the 'cozy' mystery, despite it having a huge growth in recent years - as has the historical mystery. Possibly the choices were largely chosen by the authors own interests - he admits, when discussing Agatha Christie (my own personal favourite author) that he finds it hard to see why her fiction has been so "enormously popular" and lists her faults as, "thinness of characterization" a "lack of psychological insight" and a style that "trembles on the edge of cliche." Indeed, although the author does look at the recent success of Scandinavian crime writers, much of this book looks at American crime fiction and classic crime fiction at that. Following interesting insights on the politics of crime fiction, gender and race, the second half of the book has brief essays on some key crime novels - from Edgar Allan Poe's, "The Murder in the Rue Morgue", through "The Sign of Four" and through to "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo."
I agree with other reviews of this work, which suggests it is really an academic book. For those who love the genre of crime fiction there will be much of interest, but, beware if you have not read the books reviewed already as the plots are discussed in great detail. If you are thinking of reading any of the classic crime novels reviewed in the second part of this book, then it would be best to leave that review until after you have read the novel in question. However, if you are familiar with the books, it is interesting to compare your own impressions with the author's thoughts.
