Dr Philip Langton is currently a Senior Lecturer and Academic Director of e-Learning in the Faculty of Medical and Veterinary Sciences at the University of Bristol, UK. In addition to conducting research into the physiology of small arterial blood vessels, funded by the British Heart Foundation, Dr Langton is an acclaimed undergraduate and graduate teacher, contributing to Medical Sciences and Physiological Sciences programmes. Finalist of ‘Bioscience Teacher of the Year’ for 2011, Dr Langton is devoted to improving student’s learning experiences and disseminating innovative and high-quality learning practices.

Essential Guide To Reading Biomedical Research Papers - More Than A How-To

Essential Guide to Reading Biomedical Papers: Recognising and Interpreting Best Practice is a very useful book that goes beyond the title in some ways and doesn't quite approach it in others. This is not a guide to writing research papers, as some might expect. But in the process of helping people understand how to read research papers, this book covers a lot of information that would assist people who actually are conducting research. So this book really helps the reader understand various specialized research techniques. And as such, it is applicable to other scientific research areas where these techniques are used.

Areas that are covered include molecular, cell, organism and population approaches. This book focuses on the research techniques in each area that are used to produce experimental data. Even general statistics are covered. By understanding how research data is generated, readers can be better able to understand and validate the results as they are presented in the research.

This collection is geared towards recent post-graduates without extensive field experience. For those without extensive hands-on research experience, this primer covers more topics than most could employ in years of different research projects. Albeit each technique is covered at a high level, but with more than enough detail to understand how a given research project was conducted.

Each area is actually a separate research paper written by a separate person. As such, this is not a cohesive "how-to" guide but rather a collection of papers. At times it seems rather disjointed, and there is a lack of a standardized approach between the papers. This is still a very useful volume, but just know what to expect.

CONCLUSION

This is an extremely useful book that will be a valuable resource for anybody who has to read, understand and validate research papers. Each section is independent and the book lacks a cohesive unified approach. But it still covers most modern techniques. As such, it is a very good primer and I recommend it.

A good start, but needs more

Scientific papers for the biomedical audience often contain a wide array of errors, including incorrect inclusion criteria, incorrect outcome measures, poor selection of a gold standard control, and inadequate interpretation. This text explores some of the potential errors that can arise in the basic science world but does not move outside of that world. Within the text are treatises that investigate issues of basic science studies specifically within the realm of biology, but which do not go on to examine issues within the medical literature. The text is an excellent start, and perhaps the title of the book is where the problem lies: this is more of an essential guide to reading basic biologic papers rather than biomedical papers. The foreword reveals this, as it focuses on the issues of biological research, rather than on issues of biomedical research. I highly recommend this book to the basic scientist or to the student of epidemiology and statistical analysis, the latter in particular as the text reveals difficulties which can arise in the interpretation of basic science literature. But for the physician interested in exploring the inadequacies of the medical literature, I would recommend turning elsewhere.

Recommended beginner's introduction

More and more I've found myself reading about health-related research. I've discovered that it's not so much the findings that matter to an individual as it is that individual's ability to understand the research documents.

I've randomly read many of the essays compiled in this book. These points of view, taken together, cover the fundamental knowledge necessary to understand the footnotes to most medical research. These areas include nutrition, pharmaceuticals, medical procedures and more.
