An excellent book for people who wants to go deep into the Chilean drama 1973-1990 and the historical conditions that generate that "dark night" of chilean history.
Innovative and very attractive structure of the story.
Once I started I could not stop reading.
The chapter on the maid`s view of the facts made me cry.
A great novel for people trying to understand chilean culture.
I strongly recommend this very intelligent and amusing novel and historical essay at the same time.

I've always loved this series. This book is especially good! I mean, sure, not a fast - paced action - adventure book, but seriously a good read. I love how Hayley overcomes her fears, and does what she needs to do. This is a perfect realistic fiction book for girls 9 - 13. Nice job, Lisa Papademetriou. ( p.s. the confessions are a nice touch.)

I love this book. But, in my opinion I wanted her to be with Marco and not kyle. I am not saying that becuz he is blind. I just think her and Marco have more history together and I know Marco like her I just wish that she would like him back. Kyle is nice but I don't think he belongs with her. But I love this series and these books.

It is hard to find such an intriguing book that is aimed towards young adults. It's really good to read, especially if you find you're struggling with standards and the like yourself. If you could see my copy now you would be surprised at how old and worn it looks because I have read it at least 10 times. From page 1, you are hooked and don't want to put it down. Once you get to the end you can't wait to start the sequel: "Kate's Return" it messes with your emotions. You laugh, you cry, you get angry, adn you k\just plain enjoy it. I would recommend it to anyone, teens and adults alike. You will love it.

Interesting, intruiging, and powerful.

This has to be one of the greatest religious books I have ever read. I had a hard time getting into it in the beginning but after the first couple of chapters I couldn't put it down. If I could summarize "Kate's Turn" in one sentence I would say that this is a powerful 'coming of age' story where one girl is put to the test of finding her maturity and spirituality all in one. I would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in 'coming of age' novels.

Behind the Mattachine Mask

I'm not sure what Sears thinks he is doing but lumping together profiles of three generations of gay rights activists into his enormous, authoritative study, but if you ask me, I could have done without those heaping helpings of Hirshfield and Manuel Boy Frank.

Be that as it may, nothing will prepare you for the depth of research Sears has performed on the most interesting and still controversial years of gay liberation, the Mattachine Society and its series of constitutional conventions in 1953. After all the scholarship in the last 20 years on the subject, you'd think there would be no more to say, and yet Sears has found a way to put a new spin on everything but approaching the controversy from a completely different angle. This book doesn't treat Harry Hay as a sacred cow or some kind of Joan of Arc angel; indeed as the subtitle shows, Sears is here placing front and center Harry Hay's worst nightmare, the San Francisco printer and porn impresario Hal Call as the hidden master of the Mattachine.

It's an unconventional stance but it causes us to view anew our prejudices towards the original, "communist" founders of the Mattachine and to probe into a delicate area, to what extent did the "tainted" pasts of these leaders pre-doom the movement early on. Even to pose the question carries a thrill of transgression, and Sears winds up backing off from the implications of some of his answers. I had the funny feeling while reading the book that, as often as Sears speaks of Hal Call's heroic iconoclasm, his man's man stance towards sex and war and everything in between, that he (Sears) wound up not liking Call very much as a human being.

Much has been made of the unusual collage and enjambment methods Sears employed, almost like a novelist of the Dos Passos stripe, while putting together the multiple narratives of BEHIND THE MASK OF THE MATTACHINE. The effect is as hard to describe as to analyze, but sometimes entire chapters are worked up out of people's letters in a way that looks like a two-character play, as though they are speaking back and forth; sometimes Sears takes these quotes from actual correspondence between two people, but just as often there is no direct link between the speakers, and Sears is using them as a sort of point-counterpoint way to make us scrunch up our scalps and sigh over the unreliability of any one person to tell the truth about a complex social event.

His notes are generous and detailed; the problem is thatm in at least the one collection I'm familiar with, the Hal Call Papers at Los Angeles' One Institute, the papers themselves are barely organized rendering it impossible for Sears to actually be able to direct you into the right container, so it has been difficult for me to replicate all of his findings--the material is in what my dad used to call a shambles. Nevertheless I must say that Sears has done amazing work making sense, for example, of the poet Jack Spicer's role in Bay Area Mattachine affairs, and he gives us example after example of the ways in which Spicer served in multiple capacities in the Oakland Area Chapter, not just as a dilettante or looker-on, but getting his hands dirty in every conceivable way, far beyond what any of us had previously imagined.

A vast compendium

Of an early British historian it was said that "he makes a heap of all he knows." So too James T. Spears in this vast, sprawling volume. However, much of what is in the heap is intensely interesting. The detailed quotations, revealed by Spears' archival research, help us to realize what it was like to be a gay man in the forties and fifties, an era that now seems almost prehistoric.

The blurb says that Hal Call saved the gay movement. I don't think that that is the story this book tells. Instead, it shows how one man pioneered in turning the purposes of the gay movement to a commercial porno enterprise. This was far from the noble vision of Harry Hay, Dorr Legg, Don Slater and the other Los Angeles pioneers. Call's legacy is an ambivalent one, but it proved influential.

The REAL Story--Finally!

This is a GREAT book! Full of behind the scenes stories of the early gay movement that other historians have been too timid or lazy to uncover. Sears does a terrific job in not only writing the biography of Hal Call, one of the key leaders of the Mattachine Society, but of integrating that story with the real story of 70 years of gay organizing before Stonewall. To top it off he does a brilliant job documenting the connection between gay activism and gay sexuality. This book belongs on the bookshelf of any person who really wants to know about our gay history and heritage!

This is a "professor fluff" (my term if that ever goes viral) book in which the professor tells you to buy the book and that it's necessary for class and that you have to buy the newest edition but in reality there is not information in this book that isn't google-able.

Allen promises a dying man that he help his "little girl" get to Salt Lake City from Alaska. Holland has dressed and acted like a boy for the last 7 years to avoid unwanted attention. When Allen finds out that Holland is a grown woman sparks fly. This book tells the touching story of a budding woman and the man who loves her, but won't admit it.

Book came very quickly and in fairly good condition. Bit disappointed with the bottom of the spine of the book. It was really beat up and then there was a sticker that was practically impossible to remove - leaving a pretty sticky mess. But, overall, the book is great. We would purchase from this seller again.

Today, one of the best known aspects of Malcolm X’s life was his assassination in 1965 by members of the Nation of Islam following his split from the group over differences with leader Elijah Muhammad. Informative Book

Growing up in the 60's, I was shielded from the Civil Rights Movement on television. When I was older, I basically learned the gist of the movement and that M. L. King, Jr. was a Godsend to this earth and I still support his cause and just the human right that everybody is the same, no matter what color, creed, religion, nationale, etc. I also understood that Malcolm X was scary with his views, which I did see disclosed in this book. And with his Muslim background and all that you hear today, his radical views were disturbing, even for back then.
Malcolm chose to leave the Muslim group that mentored and supported him for several years and then chose to become a Muslim through the religious aspect, not the radical aspect, and began to see his mistakes about white people and really was trying to rescind his remarks and actions prior to his death.
I am giving this book a 5 star rating because it really had me on an emotional rollercoaster until the end, it was a clear and concise book, and really helped me to understand who Malcolm X Little really was. He was truly a great man later in life, and I just wish that his eyes could have been opened well beforehand because then he really would be up there in the eyes of everyone as with Martin Luther King, Jr. and would have helped the North that MLK was right about everything.

I enjoyed this book. Malcolm was an inspiration for human beings who were and still are being oppressed. Those who oppose him could not face the truth or did not desire to be different. 2015 and not much has changed in race relations.

Excellent! A candid look at the man who has become a footnote in the history of American civil rights. He deserves a greater part in history and this book illustrates that well.
