Gr 9 Up-Rafe is gay, but he hopes no one will notice at his new all-boys high school in New England. He's not in the closet exactly. Back home in Boulder, his stereotypically progressive and understanding parents championed his coming out in the eighth grade. Since then, Rafe has been unable to escape being the poster boy for Gay Pride. Tired of labels and limitations, he hides his true self in order to fit in and be just one of the guys. For a while it works, and he plays football, pals around with the jocks, and blends in with the straight guys. His best friend back home is furious with him for changing, and things really get complicated when he falls in love with Ben, the intellectual, brooding jock with whom he experiments one night. In the end, he just can't keep up the charade, and coming out of the closet for a second time results in the creation of some new friendships, but also the loss of some others. The book is peppered with Rafe's journal entries for a class, the only place where he's honest about his sexuality. His teacher's responses, while encouraging, don't add much to the plot. The book tackles issues of sexuality and coming out from an interesting angle, but at times the central message (honesty is the best policy) is a bit heavy-handed. "Rafe has been out and proud since eighth grade, and it was fine: his school friends were cool, his parents threw him a party, and his mother has become the president of Boulder’s PFLAG chapter. All this has become rather tiresome, though, and Rafe longs for a life without labels, where people can see him as Rafe before they see him as the gay kid. He hatches a plan to attend a posh boys’ boarding school out east where he can start fresh. Though initially perplexed, his parents and his best friend ultimately support him as he explores life in boyworld where his orientation is not a barrier to his being fully accepted by the jocks as well as the geeks. He develops an intensely intimate relationship with a sensitive jock named Ben that leads to his falling in love, however, and he realizes that true intimacy has to start and end with honesty. This unusual treatment of the subject of labels, integrity, and the role of sexuality in identity forthrightly explores life after homophobia; no one in Rafe’s life is troubled by his sexuality, but that doesn’t completely answer the question of when and under what circumstances his orientation is relevant. A creative writing teacher pushes Rafe to explore what he’s doing and why, and his comments on Rafe’s writing, while not preachy, offer some clear lessons, as do Rafe’s honest and painful reflections after he and Ben take their relationship as far as it can go in the context of Rafe’s omission. Fun Holiday Book 6th - 10th grade

I'm a mom who bought this book for my 6th grader's stocking. The book store had it on the table with all the other holiday classics, yet its new (10/07). They had it right though--this is sure to withstand the test of time to become a holiday favorite. It's fun santa cover made it an eye-catcher and who doesn't like secret santas for a storyline? It's all about relationships, just what kids this age are getting into. I was surprised the content was so captivating, it really held my interest. Meant for teens and tweens, I couldn't put it down either!! the ending is quite exraordinary--the last line a little grown-up, but very appropriate for the storyline. I really think kids from middle school thru 10th grade, the grade level most of the characters are in would enjoy this book. A perfect stocking stuffer. Pick one up for your favorite tween or teen! A great holiday book, but probably a fun summer read as well when dreams of romance under the mistletoe, bright lights against winter snow and cups of cocoa with minimarshies abound!!

It's Christmas time and North Ridge High School has decided to take this as an opportunity to do a school-wide Secret Santa.

Best friends Noelle Kramer and Lily Norris are indifferent about this idea. Noelle takes it as a chance to finally connect and tell her longtime crush/next door neighbor, Charlie Grant, that they are meant to be together. Lily wants nothing to do with love or romance, since just before school started her boyfriend, Jason, decided to dump her for another girl.

Celia Armstrong is the new kid in town, but once she moved in she instantly became popular when Amber Davenport and Shawna Westin decided to befriend her. Unfortunately, Celia never wanted to be popular. She would rather have friends that didn't judge what she wore or made her do things she never wanted to do. Just like Noelle, Celia saw Secret Santa as the perfect opportunity to tell her crush, Jake Morrisey, that she really liked him. Even though she surprisingly picked his name out of the bag, she knew Amber and Shawna wouldn't approve of him.

Amber and Shawna both have boyfriends already, but the one bad thing about them is that their boyfriends aren't seniors. Shawna is fine with her boyfriend, but Amber wants to be able to snag an upperclassman.

All five girls have their own motives, but will they end up with what they wanted? Tis the season to be... confused!

SECRET SANTA will put you in the Christmas spirit, even if it is only October. A quick and quirky read, Sabrina James makes you guess throughout the entire book on how the events will turn out. The perfect stocking stuffer and/or a book you can read by the fire with loads of hot chocolate nearby.

Girly, Christmas-y, and good

First of all, this is a girly Christmas story. It's a little immature, childish, and exaggerated. There are way too many exclamation points used, for instance. I read it several years ago, and I enjoyed it. It's full of fluff and not a whole lot of substance other than cute romance. I know this, but I still mostly enjoyed it.
It jumps around to several different points of view. And it's centered around a secret Santa thing their school is doing. (Do schools actually do this kind of thing? I feel like most people wouldn't have the money for it, which sucks, but it would be awesome.)
There's Noelle, who likes Charlie but is Ryan, his younger brother's, secret Santa. She's a very crappy Santa to Ryan, but things work out. There's Lily, Noelle's best friend, who's just recently been cheated on by her then-boyfriend, Jason, and has now decided to take a break from relationships. She gets Connor, and ends up getting what his best friend, Simon, likes. And there's Celia, who's just moved here and ended up hanging around with the popular girls, Amber and Shawna, but who is not very materialistic and doesn't know how to get closer to Noelle and Lily and away from Amber and Shawna. She gets Jake, who she's been crushing on, while Froggy, her nerdy lab partner who is crushing on her, gets her. Shawna gets Dennis because Amber decides they need older boyfriends, but she likes Connor, her actual boyfriend. Amber chooses Charlie, wanting to steal him from his girlfriend. (Does that sound complicated? It wasn't, in the book. Sorry, if it is.)
Those are the main characters, but there are also a few smaller roles thrown in. Like Mindy, the gossip. And David, Froggy's best friend, who goes for what he wants despite the rejections he receives.
Quite a bit happens, plot wise. As in, several of the characters have to do some growing to get what they want. And there are a lot of mess ups and complications with the presents and relationships.
Despite the over-exaggerated way of the book, it was still good. What I was expecting from a short, girly book, really. It was fun. I liked Celia and Froggy most; I liked her predicament with wanting to be away from the popular, mean girls and be friends with the nice girls, and Froggy was adorable. But I like the nerdy types, so I'm partial to him. Lily and Simon I liked second most, after them. I wasn't a big fan of Noelle and Charlie and Ryan, mostly because I didn't like what Noelle was doing. That was just stupid and not okay. Amber I did not, as I was supposed to. Most of the others were mostly just okay, I guess. But I did like the variety of characters that are shown.
I don't know why, but I like these kinds of books. I've read some of James' other books, and liked them about the same as I did this one. Despite the not great, over-exaggerated writing, I do enjoy them, quite a bit. They're just romantic, fluffy, and good.

Amazing CD!!

Filled with information and insight! S. Kent Brown's knowledge is so far superior to mine that I feel hypocritical trying to review his work. All I can say for sure is that I learned a lot and enjoyed the experience immensely. I wish, I think, that Brown had been the reader of his own words. I felt like I wanted to know the man personally, and wanted him to be my friend. I also feel like I know Lehi and Nephi personally. I will now read the printed version for more information and enjoyment.

Then I was at Nora's door. There was no one milling about in the hallway this time. In fact, it seemed even more dark and deserted than usual.

"Come in!" Nora yelled. She was sitting out on the patio. Already Jessie's stuff had a dusty, Pharaoh's tomb look to it. I hurried through the room and joined Nora outside.

"Where have you been?" I demanded.

"Crisis counseling." She jumped out of her seat and paced the patio, stalky as a wet cat.

"What really happened to Jessie?" I asked. "Did she . . ."

"I don't know. When I woke up, she was gone."

"What do you mean, 'when you woke up she was gone'? People were talking about an ambulance. They said she killed herself."

"Look, I don't know anything about that." Nora enunciated every word. I wanted to shake her or something. Jessie had been my friend too.

"But what about all her stuff?" I demanded. "What about her wallet? Are you telling me she just got up in the middle of the night and walked out of your room and . . . disappeared?"

A thrilling mystery with a few flaws

The Last Academy was pretty middle of the road for me. I felt that the characters were not very deeply developed. The main character Camden was likable enough, though there were some points where things she said or did got under my skin a bit. For example, when she gets to Lethe Academy, she refers to a group of girls as her "friends", after only having one or two interactions with them. To me, that seemed odd. Also, there were quite a few boarding school cliches in the book, and some of the situations between the students were a little too obvious and predictable for my taste. That being said, the plot itself was fast-paced and exciting enough to keep the me turning the pages. I read the book in one sitting. I will admit that I was surprised when I finally learned what was really going on at Lethe, and the mystery and suspense leading up to the reveal was quite spooky at times. I really enjoyed racing along with Camden as she tries to figure out what is happening at the school. I do feel that some of the flaws I found in the book might not bother a younger reader quite so much. I just didn't quite connect with the whole boarding school experience and social situations. I did connect with the deeper emotional aspects of the book, but to tell you what they were would be a spoiler. I will say that there are some really deep parts to this book if you can overlook some of the more superficial character flaws. While reading, I found quite a few things annoying; but after turning the last page, I felt as though I had learned something important and profound. (If that makes any sense.)
All in all, The Last Academy was an enjoyable read. It was suspenseful, thrilling, and the end had my heart in my throat! I would suggest that if the blurb catches your interest, then go on and pick this one up. It is a fast paced thriller that will keep you on your toes and turning the pages late into the night!

easy to read, easy to love, not so easy to let go!

i started this book thinking it may be too "young" for me but since i read the hunger games and twilight i felt like i could put my figurative guess jeans (with the must have triangle question mark patch on the back right pocket of course!)that i wore in junior high and adapt to teen speak and thought process easily enough again. after the first chapter i was in the groove and was moving along with Camden on her journey adjusting to new town new school new friends new drama new love etc.

during the first half of the book i was involved in the daily life, ups and downs with twists and turns, in this teenager's life all the while wondering "what the heck is really happening here?!" i knew something was afoot but couldn't put my finger on it.

the second part of the book was starting to get nudged a bit by my brain and spidey senses kicked in and i thought "could this be it? but no, then how would that work? keep reading keep reading..."

SPOILER ALERT:
nope,i am not going to give any spoilers away. it's kind of a "you had to be there" thing so you will just have to read it yourself! but i will say,

the last third of the book i was so engrossed in Camden's journey as well as the other characters (who were well written. although you might think they are not at first, wanting more backstory into who they are and why, trust me it will all come together for you and you will not be disappointed!) that i couldn't put the book down. i had to order an almond milk mocha at 8pm to keep reading until i finished!

the ending was superbly scripted leaving you with just enough to close the book and still think about some characters and what would become. an ending where you could keep the story going in your head a bit so you didn't have to let them go but an ending that ties things up in a way that you are satisfied that the journey you went on with Camden has come to a close.

Then, i read the author's note at the end and i was floored that this was her first book! kudos anne applegate! if this is your first then i am avidly awaiting to see what you have up your writer's sleeve next, count me in for your second!

a very different rite of passage

The dialogue in Anne Applegate's book is fresh, upbeat, funny, and right on the mark. Unexpectedly, the brightness of the dialogue pulls you, almost before you realize it, into a dark and sometimes frightening place. The Last Academy is like stumbling, laughing, into a house of mirrors and belatedly realizing you are lost and really can't get out. The main character, Camden, searches awkwardly but with perseverance to find her way in a world of flawed characters and distorted images. A very different rite of passage book that will leave a lump in your throat. I highly recommend it.

Hard to put down!

I'm surprised that there weren't many reviews for this book on amazon because I really enjoyed this book, even as an adult. It's along the lines of Pretty Little Liars and The Lying Game but with its own twists to the story. Hayley has an almost spotless academic and social reputation in hopes of getting a top scholarship. Unfortunately this makes her a pretty easy target but who would want to ruin this unassuming girls chance to go to college, or even her life? As it turns out there are a few more candidates than she would have like to believed. The only thing I would change about this book is the "point horror" written in large red font on the back and the photograph of half of the girls head. They aren't a good representation of the story inside. BUT, the story itself I really liked and would read more by this author!

Gripping, Unique Must Read

Sometimes, the best decision can feel very, very wrong; particularly for a teen-ager. When Hayley chose to give up extracurricular activities to focus on schoolwork, she knew that she would become a bit of an outcast. The prestigious scholarship that she has set her sights on will be totally worth it, though. Or so she keeps telling herself.

Of course, the pursuit of excellence can be quite stressful. Without the distractions of peers, Hayley’s summer had gone very well; but, with the beginning of school, self-doubt rears its ugly head. Sure, her skin is thick enough to handle the stage-whispered barbs from girls that once were treasured friends. Okay, her relationship with Adam may feel a bit strained, but what does he expect? He is her toughest competitor for the Ainsworth scholarship and he most certainly doesn’t need the financial assistance; whereas it is Hayley’s only chance at college.

Fully immersed in school assignments, acting as Editor of the yearbook and continuing her work towards her scholarship, Hayley begins to feel that the stress is affecting her. At first, she hears snippets of conversation that appear to be aimed at her, but she doesn’t know why. Rumours are being spread about things she has supposedly done. Total nonsense, but eerie, nonetheless.

Just as Hayley begins to suspect sabotage, proof emerges, in the form of a Facebook page. Now, she is forced to question her sanity. “Hayley’s” new Facebook has pictures of her in places that she doesn’t remember being, doing things she most certainly would not do……under normal circumstances. Has the pressure created an alter-ego, is someone out to get her, or is she simply going crazy? Hayley must solve this mystery quickly, while she still has a tenuous grip on who she really is.

Ms. Davies created an outstanding, creepy, mystery with Identity Theft. This reader was quickly consumed and constantly “solving” the conundrum. The twists and turns were plentiful without bogging down the story, and I was completely surprised by the ending. This is a perfect book for the Middle-Grade and High School audience. A special thank-you to Ms. Davies for having her characters listen to my two very favourite bands of all time.

I don't tend to read much horror being a huge wimp but I liked that the premise for this book mentioned sisters, a soft spot for me. I also liked that the one sister was an overachiever bent on an ambitious goal for college, something I always admire. So I decided to give it a shot.

Honestly I did not find this book that thrilling. There was the brittle Hayley who has forsaken everything in pursuit of her academic goal (including sport, boys, and friends) and maintains her discipline behind a humorless disposition. Until pictures of her on social networking sites partying start popping up and it becomes clear to Hayley that someone is trying to ruin her life. Further research reveals that it is her previously unknown twin sister and she wants to take over Hayley's life no matter the cost.

Man, I thought I could connect with a girl who is into academia but I just could not get behind Hayley. Her rigidity drove me crazy. I mean, I loved school and studying but it cannot be all that one does. Another reason I may not have liked her is that there's this cute boy who obviously likes her but who she ignores as competition while fawning over a guy with whom she has very little in common. Her mother's presence is limited despite ostensibly being an important part in bringing the twin girls into the world and I found the logic behind their separation...odd and difficult to swallow.

What I did like was the chilling premise around one's online presence. Although I tend to think of it more in terms of what you're doing being captured online and potentially haunting your future rather than someone maliciously attacking you, I know that's also a possibility. It really made me think about I do online (I try to keep my blog somewhat low-key and not too detailed about my personal life but if someone wanted to go after me, I don't know how I could stop it.)

Overall: I was not impressed-the story wasn't very strong nor was it thrilling. This might be better for fans of 80s teen horror novels but I was never much of a fan.

Some of the best strategies for short-term and day traders!

I have read many reviews on other sites on this book and I am amazed by the amount of people that think for one second that Jeff Cooper would just give you a trading system for $100. I must admit, that with a little ingenuity one can make a lot of money with these strategies. You won't find an easier method of trading if you use just a little common sense and approach these strategies with a well devised trading plan. However, this system isn't for everyone, as it usually comes with intra-day drawdowns in your p-n-l, but it's the end of the day that counts. The strategies look to capture the big moves and not the quick bucks, there is more money to be made that way.

The Hit and Run strategies follow the best trading practices:

-enter as a stock is moving in your direction (the trend is your friend)

-know your risk (have your stop-loss in place)

-lock in profits

-maximize your gains

-being prepared before the market opens

-solid strategies based on price-action that have worked for years

The only problem that I have with the strategies are that it seems to me to have too large of a stop-loss for the intra-day trader. Once again, with a little thinking I devised a way that works for me...risking less per trade than what Cooper mentions in the book.

What's so amazing about trading is that so many people are looking for "Something for Nothing" and it just isn't going to happen. Why, who wouldn't pay $100 for a trading system that worked? The truth once again is that many people could be 'given' a trading system that was profitable, but they would somehow mess it up. Trading systems that work, work because the emotional element (the human mind) has been eliminated. So I must say get the book and study the market, you can be successful using the strategies in this book!

Then again, read the other reviews, convince yourself it doesn't work and let me keep trading the strategies my personalized way and let me make the money.

REVISED OLDIE BUT GOODIE

Everything I mentioned in my critic about the orignal Hit and Run stands still true for this one, but don't expect to be a fantastic trader from the start either. You have to study his setups, what works now and what doesn't. It would help to get his swing/day trading service for a while and pick up on the ideas. Of course, Jeff's daily commentary are the BEST, bare none. Well worth to invest in his books and service, but don't expect instant miracles either.

And yes, Jeff is a successful trader himself, working out of his home in Malibu. The book and setups are not just text book varieties, they come from real life every day trading.

Buy the book, read it through twice, order his service through Minyanville.com and start with small share lots and gradually get bigger as you get more comfortable. The bottom line is, if you follow his strategy to the T, you will make more money than you lose. He is that good. A must read for new traders.

About the Author
John C. Crotts is a Professor and former founding director then chair in the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management in the School of Business at the College of Charleston. Prior to this position, he lectured in the Advanced Business Program on tourism subjects at Otago University, Dunedin, New Zealand and was Director of the Center for Tourism Research and Development at the University of Florida. His research encompasses the areas of economic psychology, tourism marketing and sales strategy, and management of cooperative alliances. In 2011, he was ranked 33rd in research productivity worldwide in the top 6 hospitality and tourism management journals between 2001-2009 by Park, Phillips, Cantor and Abbott, and was recognized by Pearce as one of the 10 most influential scholars in tourism, marketing and psychology. In addition to serving as the founding editor of the "International Journal of Culture, Tourism & Hospitality Research", he also serves on the editorial boards of 12 tourism research journals including the "Journal of Travel Research", the "Journal of Business Research", and the "Journal of Travel and Tourism Marketing".

Dimitrios Buhalis is Professor of eTourism and Director of eTourism Lab at Bournemouth University. His research focuses on strategic management and marketing, tourism marketing, technology and eTourism.
