A Catered St. Patrick's Day by Isis Crawford
Realize the author has put out other books along the same lines, just different holidays and after reading 1/2 of
the first page I know I will be hunting down the rest of the books to read.
Being as I do bake just listening, reading about how they are handling the dough makes me think I can learn something
from them by reading this book. The luck is with them, besides the 4 leaf clovers they have the kitchen witch there.
I remember making them to sell at craft shows.
Libby and Bernie run the bakery shop and live upstairs with their Dad.
Brandon is the bar tender that covers for the morning guy cuz he's in the hospital. Til he finds Mike out back.
Mike is dead and now Duncan is arrested. His aunt comes to his rescue and wants the family to find out who really did murder
Mike so Duncans' name can be cleared. The family (Libby, Bernie and their dad Sean) has done investigations before because they just know everybody in town and
how they are related to one another.
The girls start by visiting with Duncan and he tells them his story, several different ones. They then go visit with Brandon at the
bar as he's on duty to maybe run a few things past him.
Their father also is following up a lead with the guy who drives the hearse. They all get leads to other sources and trace them out as well.
What each of them has to go through to get the answers is sometimes too funny.
The best part of this book for me was their daily routine of making and baking the bread, priceless!
Good mystery story also. Can't wait to get the authors other holidays books.

What? No Smell?

This is the first of the Bernie and Libby mysteries that I have read, and I would consider reading more of them. This one, however, has what I consider one glaring error. Two of the characters break into a house, looking for its occupant. They find her, dead in the bathtub. But they have to look all over the house first, to finally discover her. It seems to me that if she has been dead two weeks, according to the ex-cop's estimate, she would have been rather "fragrant." Or the neighbors would have alerted police to a "foul smell" emanating from the house. But no -- not a single mention is made of the fact that a dead body, left to its devices for even a few days let alone two weeks, would be causing all comers to faint, throw up, or otherwise react to a horrible smell. What's up with THAT?

Scripture is central to the life of Christian communities, but what is it that drives Christians to continuously reflect on its words? In offering a response, Sarisky examines scriptural interpretation from a theological viewpoint which centers on the following four issues: the identity of the reader of Scripture, the nature of the Bible itself, what occurs during the practice of reading, and the significance of reading’s location in an ecclesial setting.

Divided into three parts, the book begins with a presentation of Basil of Caesarea’s theological account of biblical interpretation by synthesizing his position on these issues. It then offers a critical interaction with Stanley Hauerwas and Rowan Williams, both major contributors to the lively discussion of theological interpretation of Scripture. The book culminates with a third theological account: that it is necessary to view readers as creatures shaped in the image of God who find their purpose and fulfillment in attaining his likeness, yet there is a marked difference between how people are and how they ought to be. Scripture’s theological character is instrumental in highlighting this gap and restoring human life to its proper form. As a result, the ability of Scripture to allow readers to realize their vocation as human beings is central to the concept within Christian communities.

The volume strikes a sure balance between realistic issues and teenage sarcasm. For instance, the school is nicknamed "Fashion High" because of the ridiculous sartorial standard set by the students. Chloe is distraught to notice that her lifelong best friend, Mackenzie, is becoming distant, shallow and increasingly obsessed with popularity. Two-time Eisner nominee Norrie depicts a hilarious panel for the image of Mackenzie's "nightmare... los[ing] our precarious social footing": the tops-turvy friends are being sucked into a black hole labeled "unpopular!" Chloe befriends nerdy-but-oddly-handsome Adam, despite the damage such a friendship could do to her "popular girl" status. The two become a couple, but Chloe keeps it a secret from Mackenzie and their two other "inner circle" friends, Erika and Isabel. When the trio discovers Chloe's secret, she inadvertently alienates all three friends—as well as Adam. The stakes get higher: Erika deals with a pushy boyfriend who wants sex, Mackenzie's scheming social climbing explosively backfires. In the final chapters, Friedman moves from giggly gossip, instant messages and lattes, to a thoughtful exploration of the difficult time the girls have reconciling their friendships, and learning to accept each other for who they are. Grade 6–8—Dreamy, artistic Chloe alienates her friends Erika, Isabel, and Mackenzie when she falls for Adam, the biggest outcast in their high school. The conventional cartoon style of the black-and-white drawings is attractive and accessible, giving the story the look of a hipper "Archie" comic. The resulting tone is light and squeaky clean. Chloe and Adam's romance is sweetly awkward, and the friends ultimately support one another with heartfelt advice. There are some mature themes: Mackenzie has already lost her virginity, and Erika's boyfriend is pressuring her to have sex. The author of Hollywood Hills (2005) and French Kiss (2006) branches out into graphic novels with this likable story of rocky friendships and romances illustrated by award-winning artist Norrie. The four central teen characters fit neatly into types: "wild Mackensie, sassy Isabel, and angelic Erika." Narrator Chloe ("aspiring artist . . . borderline neurotic") describes the girls' tumultuous junior year at Georgia O'Keeffe School for the Arts (nicknamed "Fashion High" for its stylish student body), during which their changing feelings about sex, love, and popularity pull them apart. Gossip Girls and A-List seriesreaders will feel right at home with the physically flawless characters and trendy clothes. The well-paced text and skillful black-and-white art include many authentic, standout moments. Norrie's art is particularly noteworthy, with touches of fantasy (butterflies winging out of stomachs) and spot-on body language (while chatting with a girl on the phone, a boy takes off his glasses and assesses himself in his mirror). Well-drawn characters and a good story

This teen romantic comedy is the newest release from Scholastic's GRAPHIX line of youth graphic novels, which also includes The Baby-Sitters Club series, the wildly adventurous Bone series by Jeff Smith, and the new Goosebumps graphic novels by R. L. Stine.

"Breaking Up" follows the ups and downs of four friends in their junior year of high school. They attend the Georgia O'Keefe School for the Arts in New York City, but they've nicknamed it "Fashion High" because all the artsy kids who go there try *so hard* to be cool, fashionable, and different. The star of the book is Chloe Sacks, who loves school and her painting classes but just isn't into Fashion High's rat race of popularity and parties. She's surrounded, however, by three best friends who really *do* care, and sometimes their conflicting agendas cause arguments, misunderstandings, and DRAMA the likes of which even artsy Fashion High has never before seen.

The real culprit in the conflict is Chloe's friend Mackenzie, who wants desperately to be a top-of-the-hive Queen Bee and who thinks that pursuing the school's popularity royalty, no matter how cruel and untrustworthy they are, is the surest way to the top. As Mackenzie strays from the fold, Chloe focuses her attention on painting--and on Adam, the smart, talented, but dangerously un-cool guy with whom she shares more interests than with anyone else, even her best friends.

Chloe and Mackenzie polarize towards the suave and geeky crowds and end up pulling their other friends (sheltered, rebellious Isabel and shy, true-blue Erika) between them. Junior year becomes a tug-of-war that makes them all unhappy, with each one struggling to grown up and define what's most important to her. The central issue here is honesty: Isabel tries to get more freedom by fibbing to her parents, Erika dumps a boyfriend who tries to pressure her into getting physical, Mackenzie loses her mind and steps out with a good friend's beau, and Chloe, disastrously, tries to keep her relationship with the unpopular Adam a secret from everyone.

"Breaking Up" treats all these tangled bonds with honesty, sweetness, and a good dose of teenage melodrama. Though its plot is a bit predictable, Aimee Friedman's script brings a lot of humor and some really wonderful character touches, like when Chloe begins to pick up Adam's habit of throwing out obscure, fascinating facts to her friends, followed by the phrase "It's just something I know." With such likable quirks, the author conveys a whole world of shifting teenage affections and insecurities.

This graphic novel's great strength, though, is Christine Norrie's awesome black-and-white cartooning. Norrie is best known for drawing the charming punk-family dramedy comic "Hopeless Savages," and she continues creating great illustrations in the pages of Fashion High. She uses clean, pleasing lines; each of her characters has a distinct look; and the kids' spot-on body language conveys all the froth of their teenage hearts. I hope there are more Fashion High comics to come, and I hope Christine Norrie draws them.

"Breaking Up" is recommended for teens because it deals in part with high-schoolers' questions about going steady and making out. The language in it is quite clean, and the situations stay clear of anything graphic. It's a good, solid teen novel that's like a less "mature" alternative to the "A-List" and "Clique" series--fun, engaging stuff for young readers, especially those interested in art and reading about teens involved in dance and the visual arts.

Friends forever! That is exactly how Chloe Sacks feels about her tight group of girlfriends. Since what seems like forever, Chloe, Isabel, Erika, and Mackenzie have been inseparable. They did everything together, from sharing secrets to gossiping with one another. And when they start out their junior year together, Chloe is sure that it will be another great year for them all. But little does she know that as they enter their junior year, they may actually become distant.

The new school year does not start off too well for the girls. Instead of having all of their classes together they only have one--Health, with the very weird Ms. Lamour. Not only are their schedules changing, but so are they.

It seems like all Mackenzie can think about is getting "in" with the popular crowd, befriending Nicola Burnett, the girlfriend of Gabe, who Mackenzie is beginning to fall for. Isabel is having trouble with her very controlling parents, especially when she really wants to date soccer player Brad Richmond. Erika loves her boyfriend, Kyle, very much, but is beginning to question their relationship since all Kyle thinks about is pressuring her to take their relationship to the "next level." And Chloe is beginning to have feelings for Adam Stevenson, who, unfortunately, around school is considered a loser, even by her own friends.

A new year, new relationships, and a new perspective on how the girls begin to look at each other. It seems like the girls' junior year isn't turning out to be what they expected.

Different from what Aimee Friedman normally writes, BREAKING UP: A FASHION HIGH GRAPHIC NOVEL, is a quick and easy read that will definitely pull the reader in from the very beginning. Aimee Friedman hits the target with high school angst in this graphic novel, with characters that are easy for the readers to relate to. The novel deals with real life
issues from relationships to friends. It was like watching another episode of Degrassi The Next Generation - Season 1. And the pictures, illustrated by Christine Norrie, were absolutely amazing.

Breaking Up (with Your Best Friend) is Hard to Do

Welcome to Georgia O'Keefe School for the Arts, where teenaged artists and fashionistas strut down the hallways.

BREAKING UP: A Fashion High Graphic Novel tells the story of four students: bold Mackenzie, dancer Erika, striking Isabel, and artistic Chloe, our narrator. The girls used to be as thick of thieves, especially Chloe and Mackenzie, but as junior year goes on, they drift apart. Will their friendship survive boys, school, and family issues?

Mackenzie starts off the year with a bang, getting a lightning bolt tattoo on her back/shoulder. On a quest to be loved and popular, she seeks out the attention of the reigning couple of their grade level. Mackenzie finally becomes friends with the queen bee, Nicola - and begins secretly dating Nicola's boyfriend, Gabe.

Erika has been dating Kyle since they were sophomores. They share a passion for music, though different kinds: quiet Erika plays the piano while Kyle rocks out on his guitar with his band. Their friends think they look cute together and tease them about how sweet they are, not knowing that Kyle's pressuring Erika to do something she doesn't want to do.

Isabel has a gleam in her eyes and a need for her parents to ease up on her. Her parents are generous and loving in many ways, but they don't want her to date and they constantly keep tabs on her. Frustrated, Isabel throws herself into dance rehearsals. She starts seeing a soccer player named Brad even though it's against the rules.

At the heart of it all is Chloe. While developing her talent in art class, she also develops a crush on Adam, a boy that Mackenzie thinks is totally dorky. Dating him might mean pushing an already drifting Mackenzie further away. Chloe finally admits to herself that she does like Adam, and when she finds out he likes her too, they start to date. By not telling her friends about her first real boyfriend, though, Chloe's only hiding something huge from them and making Adam feel as though she's ashamed of him.

As the story proceeds and the girls grow too busy and too caught up in their personal lives to talk as much as they used to, it gets easier to lie to one another or avoid each other entirely. The tension builds, then explodes, and the once tight-knit group effectively breaks up. It is this disintegration to which the title truly refers, telling a story that many girls have gone through themselves with their best friends.

This graphic novel boasts detailed black-and-white illustrations by Christine Norrie and text by Aimee Friedman. The dialogue is easy to follow, as is Chloe's narration. Unlike the majority of comics and animated projects, which have characters stay in the same outfits ninety-nine percent of the time, Norrie blesses these characters with varied wardrobes. This is a plus. After all, the series called FASHION HIGH, and I don't think Mackenzie would be caught dead in an outfit she had already worn. It also gives each girl a style indicative of her personality. Mackenzie and Isabel are more trendy than Erika and Chloe, who tend to be conservative. Norrie gives each girl a distinct look, making it easy to tell who's who, while Friedman gives each her own voice.

The story does touch on some mature topics, making it appropriate for ages 14 and up, a little older than Scholastic's typical reader. In this particular case, the closer the reader is to the age of the four girls depicted, the more likely the reader is to relate to their experiences.

Excellent reference

An excellent reference book that covers a broad range of audio engineering topics - your are bound to find something useful on almost anything audio. However, it is a practical engineering text, not a "how to" for recording artists. As an introduction to audio engineering, it quickly gave me the background I needed on variety of audio engineering topics as well as specific guidance for technical issues I was working on at the time. The only drawback is the nature of such a comprehensive technical work ... in attempting to cover a broad range of topics in one volume, it cannot take any one topic to extensive depth. That said, I found the depth adequate for my needs. At a minimum, it gave me enough information to point me in the right direction. I would buy it again. I keep it at work for ready reference and have referred to it often.

Beware the Phantom Carrot!

Magic Pickle is filled with deliciously bad one-liners, fantastic artwork that feeds the mind, and characters that are a tasty blend of cheesiness and justice. Some of the villains are just downright ingenious, such as the Phantom Carrot and the Romaine Gladiator. Perhaps the best part of this book is the lengthy afterword, in which the author provides notes and "secrets" as to how to draw your own evil produce. A quick, fun read for goofy adults, and a book that will most likely appeal to reluctant young readers.

My daughter loved it

My 6 year old (strong reader) was home sick one day. She saw this book that I had brought from the library. Picked it up and did not stop until she was done. She loves to read and reads all the time but rarely does she do that with a book. Also, she is requesting all the sequels and can't wait to go to the book store to get them (as our library doesn't have). They were recommended to me highly by an 8 year old boy.

I don't want a pickle, I just wanna ride my motorcycle

I should begin this review by being straight with you. I am not an impartial reader of this book. There have been times, more in my life than I can count, when I have craved a dill pickle spear. I admit it. The cat is officially out of the bad. I love pickles and I'm not ashamed of the fact. And magic pickles do sound tasty. On the other hand, I'm also a picky graphic novel reader. There's so much tripe out there being produced for kids these days that anytime I get handed a new children's GN my immediate reaction is to cringe. And "Magic Pickle", for all its myriad charms, didn't necessarily look like something I might enjoy. Still, I gamely plucked it up and found to my surprise that not only is it readable and fun, I also detect a sly understated wit at work here. As understated as scientifically advanced super veggies can be, anyway. Since big green superheroes tend to be of the "Hulk, smash!" variety, I suggest you take a moment out of your day to try your hand at a smaller equally green superhero, unafraid of villainous produce or footie pajamas.

His origins are super secret . . . or at least they were until he crashed through the bedroom floor of little Jo Jo Wigman. The heroic product of a scientist's lunch and some particle confabulation, the pickle Weapon Kosher fights for truth, justice, yadda yadda yadda. Unfortunately, for every dill yin there's a rotten yang to contend with. The Brotherhood of Evil Produce has just come out of hiding after more than 50 years, and that means that it's time for the cryogenically frozen pickle to get back to serving justice. Of course, his lab is now located directly under the floor of young Jo Jo Wigman and she is NOT going to be kept out of the action. Jo Jo is fighting her own battles with the mean girl at school and it's possible that the pickle might be just the answer she's been looking for.

Morse's drawing style is this elastic, energetic series of shifting panels and inserts. Images are constantly overlapping or going panel-less for maximum effect. You might not recognize it on a first reading, but Morse is doing some pretty fancy footwork with this story. For example, when Jo Jo starts spinning a crazy story about how she is wearing her pajamas at the bus stop because it's the latest style and she's coming from a swank party, her backgrounds alternate between starbursts, swirls, and a kind of eclectic cut paper effect. Morse doesn't have to do this, y'know. In fact, it's much easier to just draw boxes and put people in them without all the subconscious imagery. Easier, but less thrilling in the long run. The book doesn't actually tell you who has done the coloring for this title, which is as pity. I don't know that we can assume that Morse does his own, since that's not always the job of the artist proper. If he IS the person responsible, though, then I doff my cap to him because the colors in this book are right proper.

My boss handed me this book with the note that it was hard to get around the name "The Romaine Gladiator". So consider this your warning: If you have a low tolerance for fruit and veggie nomenclature and tomfoolery, best to avoid this puppy. I, for my part, was kind of charmed by Morse's selections. Tell me you're not just the slightest bit taken with these names from The Brotherhood of Evil Produce: Phantom Carrot, Squish Squash, Peashooter, and Chili Chili Bang Bang. Even as you read them you can see how this book will benefit from being read aloud. My own dad used to read us comic books sometimes when I was a kid, and I'm sure there will be many a young lad and lass who will enjoy hearing the sound of the pickle's adventures.

Morse's dialogue sort of sealed the deal for me, though. Weapon Kosher is a very Captain America kind of speaker. If he had a chin, it would be cleft. Jo Jo, on the other hand, is very much a smart alecky kid. In their first exchange, Kosher initially accuses Jo Jo of being "an agent of evil." Her retort is a pointed, "Are you serious? I'm wearing footsie jimmies here." Of course, Jo Jo's cool head made it a bit difficult to believe that she really felt any suffering at the hands of the school's Queen Bee, Lu Lu Deederly. You never see Jo Jo all that downtrodden after an exchange. Not that I really minded, but it meant that she didn't have much of a story of her own to pair alongside Kosher's escapades.

Still, as new graphic novel series go, this one's a keeper. Even the requisite bad puns actually come off as funny (a near impossibility when you get right down to it). I may have had my fill of superhero graphic novels, but if you combine that old standard with the ingredients of a salad, the result is magic. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for future pickle adventures to come.

Useful and easy-to-read

This book is full of useful and apparently unbiased information. The maps are in color and clear and at appropriate scales. It appears to be up-to-date. The chapters are logically divided into geographic areas. I felt that I got my moneys worth.

Great book for Cornwall

I bought the Kindle version and used it every day during our latest two week trip in Cornwall. The SEARCH function shows you a lot of pertinent information and I liked being able to click on links to take me to specific spots in the book. There is a lot to see in Cornwall and this book will definitely help you make your choices.

Wonderful reference for the Devon holiday.

This guide was one of two that we used for a week-long holiday in Devon (the other being Lonely Planet). It was a great resource, especially for out-of-the-way destinations (of which there are many in Devon).
