Gr 3-5-This entertaining graphic novel is part chicken, part hare, part comedy, part adventure. After escaping the evil clutches of taxidermist/collector Mr. Klaus, species hybrid ChickenHare and his friends are on the run. Along the way they encounter Mr. Buttons, a ghost goat with an ax to grind against Klaus. In the inevitable good vs. evil showdown, Klaus gets his comeuppance at the hands (and paws and hooves) of our heroes. Regardless of the "ya had to be there" plot involving reincarnated livestock, the action never feels confusing. The dialogue is snappy and the pace is brisk. The slick full-color illustrations are more cartoonish than Jeff Smith's "Bone" titles (Scholastic), a series to which ChickenHare will draw some comparisons. Large panels give the art room to breathe and will likely increase the appeal with younger readers. The ending promises continued adventures, and kids will likely be waiting with anticipation. Chickenhare and his friend Abe the turtle have been kidnapped and sold to Klaus, an insane taxidermist. Even if they escape his clutches, they will have to struggle to survive in the snow, find what is keeping a ghost goat from moving on, and avoid the dreaded Shromph and their razor-sharp teeth. Grine’s offbeat title has a certain manic charm. Chickenhare, Abe, and the other creatures they encounter are a fun bunch whose pluck and young looks—rendered in a bright cartoon style—will endear them to their readers. But those looking for a deeper story will likely be disappointed. The book opens in the middle of the action and never really delves into backstory or motivation. An open ending hints at more volumes to come, though there is no volume indicator included on the book. Some of the subject matter—cannibalism, a rotting goat corpse, etc.—could be a little intense for younger readers. For fans of action and humor who don’t need an overly thoughtful story. Great fun, a wonderful tale

Chickenhare, a black-and-white comic first published by Chris Grine in 2006, has had a long and wonderfully strange life, much like its title character (who is, of course, half chicken and half rabbit). There have been three volumes in the story so far: two B&W volumes from Dark Horse and a third (color) webcomic, with the first volume now being offered in glorious color from Scholastic's Graphix imprint.
Chickenhare has a best friend, a turtle named Abe. They have the distinct misfortune as the tale begins of being caught by a hunter named Mr. Barley, who sells them to a rather mean taxidermist, Mr. Klaus. Klaus has two more animals held captive and waiting to go under his knife: the bossy Meg and the argumentative Banjo. It's unclear what kind of animal Meg is, but Banjo looks like a monkey. Except he's really a krampus. Whatever that is.
The quartet manages to escape from Klaus's cages, but the taxidermist wants his animals back, and he's going to chase them across the frozen countryside. Meanwhile, Chickenhare is seeing visions of a ghostly goat who needs his help. And on top of it all, the vicious shromph are out and about and spelling danger.
It's all not only hilarious, but it's great fun, as well. Writer/artist Chris Grine is adept at telling a kids' story with the requisite thrills and adventures, and he's doesn't bog the story down by explaining all the whys and hows of this wonderful little world he's created. Instead, he propels the highly enjoyable storyline forward at top speed and lets his readers simply revel in the fun. Plus, his artwork is delightful.
The banter between all the characters, particularly Meg and Banjo, is a hoot, too. It's age-appropriate, but it doesn't talk down to young readers.
You'll love this tale, whether you're a kid or not. And it's wonderful to see it come to life in color.

INTERESTING

My 10 year old son's thoughts: This book made me laugh so loud, my sister said, "Shh!" Full of adventure and good laughs, this book will keep kids reading it FOREVER. I think it's one of the best books I've ever had. It is a little violent, but still makes you laugh. This is a series I don't want to miss.
My 41 year old thoughts: This was an odd book that I think would probably appeal more to boys than girls. If this book were a movie it would definitely be a PG to PG-13 rating for violence and cannibalism. Aaack! The pictures were well done and the story had some interesting moments in it. There is also a cliff hanger at the end to keep kids looking out for book two in the series. This is most likely one of those books your child will either love or hate.

Chickenhare is back

"Chickenhare" is an all aged, vibrantly flavored graphic novel with a a uniquely playful cast of characters who can't seem to stay out of trouble. Chickehare is exactly what it sounds like , a part chicken, part hare, making him the rarest animal ever to be found. Barley has taken Chickenhare and Abe, the turtle, and is going to sell them to a a crazy man who likes to stuff animals, dress them up and place them in cabinets. While sitting in his cage, he meets Banjo and Meg and together they come up with a pan to escape. Of course once they escape it becomes a race to not be caught. Can Chickehare and his friends make it to safety before getting hurt or snatched up again?
This is a must have book to add to your home library, to give as a gift, or an easy way to encourage children to love reading. I know you will enjoy this book as much as I did.
