This was a perfect book for my 10 year old grandson who absolutely loves this series. Keep writing Frank Cammuso and just keep this series going. My grandson has Aspergers and he enjoys every single word. The Knights of the Lunch Table books seem to actually help my grandson understand how the other kids think.

An exciting start to the series

Crazy things happen whenever Jackson Opus is around. When Jackson is recruited into a special program for hypnotists, he learns to hone his mind-bending powers, but also discovers that hypnotizing people can be a dangerous business.

Usually I wait a few days after reading a book to write up my review so that I can marinate on it for a bit, but I finished this book about 15 minutes ago and I feel compelled to write about it - RIGHT NOW! I find Gordon Korman's novels to be really hit or miss. My fifth grade students and I really enjoy some of his titles, but find others tedious and dull. The Hypnotists definitely falls into the first category of Korman's works. This is probably my favorite Korman novel ever.

The Hypnotists opens with page-turning excitement that will grab readers with a firm grip. The first scene is a crazy action sequence that follows a bus careening down New York City's busy streets with the driver under accidental hypnosis. The next sequence follows Jackson's basketball team in the league's championship game. The opposing team's star player can't seem to make a shot. You guessed it - Jackson accidentally hypnotized him.

With an opening like that, even reluctant readers will be jumping in head first. The final third of the book is just as exciting, but the middle section of the novel fades a bit.

In addition to a mostly action-packed plot, what really sold me on The Hypnotists was that it made me think. This novel is so packed with interesting questions of history and morality - How would the world be different if we could influence other people's thoughts and actions? To what extent do advertising and the media do that already? Is it okay to use manipulation if it's for a good cause?

Bottom line: This book is a great start to a new series. It includes the best elements of Korman's earlier work (adventure, colorful characters) and should entertain middle grade readers.

You are getting sleepy...

I love the hypnos, mind-benders, and Sandmen! The one problem was that at the end they erase all memories of themselves, including from his best friend.I hope book 2 comes out soon!!!!!!!!!

Better for older kids

This is one of the battle books for the 4th graders at my son's school this year. While my son enjoyed the story, I don't think this is 4th grade level reading. Like another reviewer stated, the vocabulary and concepts in this book are way above a 4th grade level. I spent a great deal of time helping my son out with the words and ideas in the story. This book would be more appropriate for middle school.

Fascinating View of an Interesting Historically Relevant Man

While fundementalist Muslims in Iran could silence Ali Dashti's voice and still his heart, they failed to supress his words. Dashti evidently put a lot of careful heartfelt thought into his volume "Twenty Three Years: A Study of the Prophetic Career of Mohammed". If you've become dreary and nauseated from reading inflated proselytizing puff pieces on the life of Mohammed, founder of the Islamic religion, then what a treat this book will be! Dashti is cautious and considerate in his handling of issues touchy within the sphere of Shi'ia Islam. He is clear in communicating whether something is from a specific source, opinion, or theory.
With this volume, Dashti took the courageous step of looking at Mohammed as a human: capable of mistakes, capable of anger, capable of being unjust, as are any of us. This perhaps, is what kindled so great a rage in the men who imprisoned him and tried to obliterate his words. I wouldn't call Dashti anti-Islamic, for I found nothing suggesting he was trying to destroy Islam, not a speck of evidence that he was trying to promote Atheism in the stead of religion. However, I am not surprised that unreasonable forces who disagreed with his point of view felt so threatened by his words. It can be a dangerous task, sorting out the facts--especially if those facts disagree with popular opinion, or the version supported by people who are more powerful and can make your life tough. Or take your life away.
Make a fundamentalists eyes bug out, make an Ayatollah's face turn red--buy and READ Ali Dashti's book. Keep the idea alive and appreciate the freedom to have ideas that are forbidden to so many others.

An All Time Classic

The late Foreign Minister of Iran 'Ali Dashti was a leading politician and classical scholar in that country. His book 'Twenty Three Years' is one of the all time classic religious biographies. It probably ranks with Fawn Brodie's 'No Man Knows My History' as one of the two best of the 20th century. After the events of September 11, 2001, Americans have suddenly awakened to the reality of Islam. Many prefer the path of political correctness, and for them 'Ali Dashti will be of no interest whatever. But for those who value candor and scholarship, who really want to know what the prophet Mohammad taught and practiced regarding the use of violence, the answer is carefully documented in this book. Admittedly the author gets quickly lost when he wanders from his chosen subject. Christian people will certainly wonder why he holds to the discredited theories of Ernest Renan regarding the origins of our Faith. But otherwise 'Ali Dashti is "A Plus". Unfortunately there was a price to be paid for candor about the prophet Mohammad, and 'Ali Dashti died after being tortured in the Evin Prison in December 1981.

Euphemisms for Islam's falsehood

Although I had the sense throughout that 'Ali Dashti was tempering many of his scholarly conclusions to suit the easily outraged, his text still comes across as blisteringly blasphemous. It is not surprising that 'Ali Dashti "disappeared" in his home country of Iran when considering the unorthodox approach he takes by interpreting much of the Qur'an as a product of the Prophet Muhammad's psychology. While Dashti doesn't explicitly renounce Islam, he vigorously attacks precepts which he sees as hideous relicts of the age the Prophet Muhammad lived. While other biographers of the Prophet, especially those writing to proselytize, might be expected to gloss over the Prophet's assassinations, mass slaughters of prisoners, and otherwise Machiavellian behavior Dashti puts it to the light. But at the same time, he doesn't neglect to mention the more positive aspects of the Prophet's personality while attempting to cut through the underbrush of the deification of the Prophet. All in all a refreshing read, though certainly one would do well to read several biographies in comparison.

the writing style is one I enjoyed

Leiann Hambrick is happy with her career as a schoolteacher in Texas until her mother's death reveals long held family secrets. Now she has discovered her beloved father was not her father at all and that she has a grandfather in Boston she never knew about. Now she must go to see him to get some answers.

Gerome Mays is convinced someone is extorting money from his step father, Herman Johnson's accounts and will do whatever it takes to find answers. He even goes so far as to take some time off from his career to got to Herman, acting as a down on his luck drifter and convinces him to hire him on as a gardener, the two of them keeping secret who he is, so as to figure out who the culprit is.

When Leiann arrives, claiming to be Herman's long lost grand-daughter, Gerome suspects her as having a hand in the thefts. When accidents start to happen to Leiann, Gerome comes to realize he has stronger feelings for her than he should for someone who may be conning his step father. Only his trust in the Lord will help him find the truths hidden within.

Who Am I? is a sweet story about finding love in unlikely places. Leiann is lost when she discovers she isn't who she always believed she was and needs to come to terms with the truth about her family. In the middle of all the upheaval, she loses her faith in God, wondering how he could have allowed her to live a lie her entire life. Then when she meets her grandfather and finds out how much he cares about her, she is even more confused as to why God had not provided her a way to learn the truth.

Gerome deeply loves and respects his step father and can't bear the thought that someone is stealing from him. The last thing he needs is a young woman creeping into his heart, and one who seems to be in danger at that. Yet in the midst of his fears and confusion, he never loses faith that God will provide all the answers and a means for Gerome to have his heart's desire.

While the writing style in Who Am I? is one I enjoyed, I had some issues with various aspects of the plot and the character's personalities. I understand that the short length of the novel makes it difficult to have too complex of a storyline, but the mystery was far too easy to solve. I had the entire thing figured out the minute Leiann arrived in Boston and spent the rest of the time wondering how long it would take Gerome to discover the obvious. I also thought Leiann was far too naïve and oblivious to what's right before her eyes. I think the naïveté was meant to make Leiann seem more like a small town innocent girl, but in actuality she bordered on my least favorite character... the TSTL heroine.

Who Am I? was my first book by Lena Nelson Dooley and while it was good, I'm not sure it was good enough to make me want to seek out more works by the author. I thought she did a wonderful job bringing the faith aspect in to her story, having strong Christians Gerome and Herman show Leiann, who turned away from God after finding out about her family, help her find her way back into the light of the Lord.

Good Romantic Suspense

Leiann Hambrick's world is turned upside down when her mother dies. She learns she's not who she thought she was. The house in which she and her mother lived belongs to a grandfather she never knew. If she wants to continue living there she must make a trip to Massachusetts to meet him. She's not sure she wants to meet this grandfather who has ignored her for so many years, but but she makes the journey, wondering how welcome she will be.
Someone is stealing from Gerome Mays' stepfather. Could this long-lost grandaughter be part of the plot? He intends to find out more about her. Then strange things begin to happen, and Leiann is in danger.
Lena Nelson Dooley's fans know they can count on her for a good story. Who Am I blends romance and intrigue in a satisfying mix, seasoned with a strong faith message.

The Emergence of the Arab Movements

George Antonius' classic study, The Arab Awakening (1939) was an original, powerful, and wrong-headed book whose message has wrecked damage across the decades. In teleological fashion, Antonius presented the intellectual history of the preceding century as a gradual building up to what he called the "Arab national movement," or Pan-Arab nationalism. In an understated but devastating rebuttal in two parts, Tauber shows that Arab nationalism dominated neither the very important pre-World War I organizations nor the rebellious activities during the war. Rather, it was but one of four main strands of thought, the others being Lebanoninsm, Syrianism, and Iraqism. In the first volume, Tauber runs through in extremely systematic fashion the personnel, organization, and ideas of each of the sixteen leading Arab organizations that came into existence in the period 1908-14, then analyses them as a whole. His achievement is impressive: for the first time, he has nailed down this much-studied but ever-elusive subject. At last, we know the who and what of those Arab organizations. All this matters very much, for their members and ideas went on to exercise great influence, and indeed, changed the course of Middle Eastern history. They became political leaders in several countries; and their ideologies still resonate in the Middle East today. In the second volume, the author shows how the four strands of thought continued to inspire Arabic-speakers, and that it was almost a matter of chance that the one revolt that took off happened to be pan-Arab in outlook. The many other efforts all ended in failure, "either because they failed to reach the stage of execution at all or because they expired after they were begun." Even among the intellectual leaders of Sharif Husayn's Arab revolt, the other three currents were swirling; and when the dream of a unitary Arab state collapsed, they came to the fore. In finally breaking the Arab nationalist hammerlock on interpreting the years before 1918, Tauber takes a giant step away from the Pan-Arab nationalist theory of history which has so stultified an understanding of Middle East politics. He also sets the record straight on a wide range of issues (for example, that leading Arab nationalist groups sought independece even before the Young Turk reign of terror). In addition, Tauber's meticulous scholarship has unearthed some extraordinary and fascinating materials: for a taste, look up either Wahib Pasha or Muhammad Sharif al-Faruqi in the index to the World War I study. In all, these two volumes constitute one of the most important historical studies of the Middle East published in years.

The Neo-Orianlists

Selective evidence dominates the book. It appears it was written to prove a number of haunting and specific points. The most salient of which is discounting the birth-date of Arab nationalism as a political force.
To do so, the book leave you with the impression that the region in the last 150 years was inhabited by a collection of unrelated peoples roaming greater Syria aimlessly. Even T.E. Lawrence could not make such a wild �Orientlist� trapeze safely.
The vehemence and temper of the author became at times somewhat unbearable. More so when he resorts to absurd surmizes and conclusions.
I do wonder whether the fundamental question the book seeks to prove is: "The absence of an Arab nation." Certainly without a 'nation' there would be no 'nationalism.' The corrollaries of that is manyfold. Take for example: 'without a nation it is difficult to speak of national rights.'
If this is the aim of the author, then the theory is not a new one worth proving. It is a part of political polemics that was very current in the fifties, and unfortunately very lately too.
Despite its arrogant and single-minded fever to prove its thesis, one can discern some scholarly work that went into writing it. Nonetheless, its main occupation reduces its academic quality and usefulness as a work of history.

Neo-Orientalist Agenda

Unfortunately I have to agree with one of the other reviewers that this book comes off as totally biased. I found it a very informative read generally thanks to the quotations memos and minutes of various European officials stationed in the region, but this is tainted by the author's obvious bias and political agenda.

Everything - every internal advancement and local Arab political decision and movement - is portrayed as insincere and pan-Islamic or some sort of cunning deception over the locals who apparently have zero in common.

I chuckled and had to shake my head a little bit when the author argues that prior to the King-Crane Commission that was sent to investigate Arab political aspirations, a literary society with 500 members initiated a massive propaganda campaign that somehow convinced the majority of the inhabitants of the Levant that they actually wanted a unified single state when in reality they didn't. The author also claims that this massive propaganda campaign by the 500-member literary club is what caused Levantine people to reject Zionism. God what a powerful literary club that must have been!

Articulatory Phonetics presents a concise and non-technical introduction to the physiological processes involved in producing sounds in human speech. With a primary focus on the basic anatomy and physiology of speech and how different kinds of speech sounds are made, the text serves as an ideal guide through this burgeoning area of research.

The authors trace the path of the speech production system through to the point where simple vocal sounds are produced, covering the nervous system, muscles, respiration, and phonation. Articulatory Phonetics

This a much-awaited book, in that nothing like it has ever been published. It covers up to date findings and technology about articulation, presented in an easy-to understand way. The figures are especially well done, very clear and very well annotated. The chapter on co-articulation is very interesting, clearly showing examples of how, for instance, tongue articulation of schwa changes when preceded by a /w/ consonant. The book is a very good educational tool, for students as well as teachers, since it presents articulatory data in a way that often is not easily available. There are also good, easy to make models of the larynx (using paper) and the tongue (using clay). And, each chapter ends with some questions for the students to think about, as well as an online assignment. I teach classes in English pronunciation and English as a Second Language and I look forward to using this as a text book.
