Great read: terrific dialogue, snarky humor, interesting characters and a fast moving storyline

Blayne Thorpe, a wolf-dog hybrid shifter, plumber and roller-derby player, is best friend to Gwen O'Neill (the main character in the previous book The Mane Squeeze.) Bo Novikov is a bear-cat hybrid shifter hockey player, known as 'the maraurder'. Gwen first saw him ten years ago while he was still with the minors. She didn't want to catch the interest of the intimidating player, but catch it she did--right before running away. Now that he just joined the Carnivores (Lach and Van Holtz's team) she catches one of his games, and it seems he never forgot her! It's a case of opposites attract. He's an introverted, highly scheduled/organized hulk. She's zany, easy-going, and cute. The storyline continues the one started in the previous book--someone is kidnapping hybrid shifters to use in illegal shifter dog fights.
Like Laurenston's other books, this one was laugh-out-loud funny. It was full of the snarky humor and awesome diaglogue that is typical of her books. Fans of Lynsay Sands, Kerrilyn Sparks, and Katie MacAlister will enjoy Shelly Laurenston. It's a shame Laurenston's books are released as trade paperbacks instead of mass market, because I really think they are good enough she should be a NYT bestseller. She does a great job with character development, world building and pulling me in with a fast paced storyline. It was great seeing past characters that I loved in the earler books -- Jess, Smitty, Sissy Mae, Mitch, Gwen, and Loch. We also met some new characters who are Bo's friends -- Sami and Sander, fox shifters. Kudos to Laurenston for another terrific addition to the already great Pride Stories series! I loved this book--read it straight through.
If you haven't read Laurenston before, this book is best read after reading the other books in the series before it. Otherwise you won't know the secondary characters and their backgrounds. I didn't read her books for a long time because of the higher trade price and I eroneously thought they were erotic romance. The Pride Stories books have a few sex scenes, but no more than other mainstream paranormal romances. If you like paranormal romance with a mix of humor, action and suspense, then give her books a try. Personally I liked her Pride Stories series best. She also wrote the Magnus Pack series and Dragonkin series (under GA Aiken). These were also good reads.

Classic Laurenston

Look...there is nothing about the plot not summed up better by other reviewers. But this book is a prime example of what Shelly Laurenston does so very well.
Fun and funny dialogue. Check.
Strong and complex relationships between women. Check.
Not your average leading lady. Double check.
VERY interesting leading men. Most definitely. Check.
Creative world building. Always.
But what I love her for is her consistent efforts to write worlds where inclusion and diversity are the norm.
Side note: I'm an African American woman who loves paranormal romance/ urban fantasy and can count on Laurenston to not only included characters of diverse and varied ethnicities but also feature them, as she does in this book. It's super cool to see Black/Asian/Hispanic characters be interesting, quirky,sexual and fully drawn. Basically, written like people and not accessories. So, thank you for that!
Now, while my first list is probably a universal want for any reader. There also some classic traits of Laurenston' s work that may not be to everyone's likeing.
Strong language. Yes, homie likes her f-bombs.
Crass language. Her ladies say what's on their minds and it's often unfiltered.
Graphic sex- This is subjective, but her sex scenes could be described from expressive to explicit. (There is usually too much humor and heart involved to describe it as pornographic. Though, she is so good at her craft...the most erotic moments are usually found between the lines of dialogue and not the sheets)
All of this is a plus on my list of requirements for an excellent read and if you find that this on your list as well, then by all means, buy this title and any of her others, today.
Seriously. Get some Shelly Laurenston I your life.

2 thumbs down, blah at best...don't waste your money..unless you need something to help you fall asleep

the story was blah at best... but i bought it to read before bed and the one thing i can say is it definitely put me to sleep.... also... one of the things i hated most besides the horrible plot and i use the word 'plot' loosely here....is that all the characters had like three names each! and some of the females had unisex names...it was confusing trying to keep up with the characters..it was exhausting to be honest...and irritating.. with that and the author's desperate attempt and failure to be funny...it was truly disappointing.. and for anyone interested.. i think there was maybe one sex scene which was a no-name brand vanilla... i read a couple from this pride series which were ok.... but after this one...im done with this author....
